Autistic Child Area Sign should be put on the street upon request for the families that they have kids are diagnosed with autism

As I know surrounding towns have this sign like West Orange, Bloomfield many others in Nj. I m very upset that our town is not cooperating to keep our special need kids safe. Especially recently we hear a lot of kids with special needs wonder, run out and it ends badly.

Parents say the signs are critically important since many with autism have a tendency to wander but don’t always fully grasp the dangers of street traffic.

Parents proactively want their neighbors or cars passing by to be aware that an autistic child may have issues outside of the home.

Hi I live in Cedar Grove. I have a toddler who is 2 year old, diagnosed with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder. He is an extremely active, curious boy. He loves outdoors. We live on the Lakewood avenue which is a very busy road especially in the rush hour, people cut through to get Ridge road then to Rt 46. I requested a " Autistic Child Area" sign from Cedar Grove township. First I called Town Manager to request a warning sign stating, they came up to me all these nonsense arguments: No parents request this so far. If we put the sign what if the other parents ask too? Then called mayor and left a msg to his extension. He said this is something police station will handle. I have been directed to the police station- to a sargent , he listened said he ll look onto it, after a week I called to follow up the progress, and guess what he says: " I looked at the manual ma'am there s no reason to put up a sign up like that" then I said: "well my son is autistic , he is the reason. " He said "other towns do put these signs on their own liability"and I said " what would be the liability to the town of putting this sign up except helping my family." Then he said " it has to come from the town anyway". Well apparently our kids dont value much as deer!! I m very upset that our town is not cooperating to keep our special need kids safe.
