Are You Listening Target? Fill My Pills Now!

Target: Robert J. Ulrich, CEO, Target Inc.
Sponsored by: Care2
Imagine walking into a store with a valid prescription for a pressing medical need and being told by the pharmacist that he or she won't fill it.

Yes, it's outrageous, but that is exactly what happened to a 26-year-old woman recently who presented a prescription for emergency contraception (EC) at a Target store in Fenton, Missouri. And it has happened to other women in cities across the country.

Target requires its pharmacists to fill all prescriptions presented by their customers with one notable exception - emergency contraception. So far, the company has failed to explain why EC has been arbitrarily singled out for refusal while all other medications must be filled. It amounts to a policy of gender discrimination because the hardship falls squarely upon women.

Store policy should never interfere with a patient's ability to get legal medication in a timely manner and without embarrassment. That's why it's critical that consumers and activists stand together to strongly oppose this growing form of gender discrimination.

Send a letter demanding that Target stores dispense medication, not moral judgment!

Dear Mr. Ulrich:

I am writing to demand that Target stores dispense medication, not moral judgment. Individual bias against filling certain prescriptions should NEVER interfere with a patient's ability to get medication in store, without discrimination or delay.

As a consumer, I will think twice about spending my money at any pharmacy that does not adopt and make public a policy allowing women to purchase the products they need, in particular, prescriptions for birth control such as emergency contraception.

Sincerely,

EC is not abortion. It prevents people from thinking they need one. EC removes the terror and desperation that may cause someone to get pregnant and seek an abortion. EC is legal and should be provided to anyone who needs it. Please don't lose customers by telling women that they shouldn't fill their prescriptions to prevent fertilization (not terminate existing embryos).

The job of a pharmacist is to dispense medication, not his opinion. If a pharmacist is unable to do that job, they should find a new career. There is no reason why this profession deserves special privileges - if a criminal entered the emergency room at a hospital, he would still be treated by a doctor. If a priest did not want to hear the sins of a criminal, he must still listen to him. It is prejudice and wrong to give pharmacists the right to judge.

Ludicrous. If you've got an employee who declines to fill the prescriptions, they should be required to work only on shifts with at least one other person who will fill the prescriptions. It's bollocks anyway; I've stopped shopping at your stores (not just the pharmacy) and have pressured my friends and family to do the same.

If the pharmacist doesn't want to fill these scripts then I suggest they find another line of work. A patient with a legal prescription asks for help and is denied service. Not a very good business practice. I shall be shopping at another retailer if this policy isn't changed. And be assured I will tell all my friends and coworkers about this.

It should be illegal for chemists to not fulfill prescriptions. If they have morality issues, let them open a different business. Let them also think about the moral effects upon whole family groups with the boom of unwanted pregnancies. Witholdence of contraception will not improve morality.

As a weekly Target shopper, and someone who gets all their prescriptions from Target, I am dismayed at this. I definitely do not feel that people should be forced to do something (although I think it is the responsibility of medical professionals to do it). I do, however, feel that if someone agrees to work for a top retail corporation, they need to be following the laws, not their individual morals. Please make changes to this policy or I will be forced to consider moving my prescriptions.

Target is putting their nose into peoples private right to use birth control and in the process they are losing alot of customers.I for one do not use contraception any longer but I do belive in other womens right to do so if they choose so I choose not to shop at Target until they change their ways.

It is not the judgment of a pharmacy whether a woman should have medication, it is the doctor who issued the prescription who shall make that judgment.

I don't have children, don't want any and I should not be denied my right to have sex! All women are denied the right to be sterilzed before the have a child!! Already a right taken from us! Don't take another right!! Talk about female supression in Iraq! What about female supression for U.S and Canada? Are we going back to the old days now without female liberation! I guess the Al-Qaida are takin over and taking our liberities away 1 by 1
