Act Now to Protect Ocean Ecosystems!

Target: Director Risenhoover, National Marine Fisheries Service
Sponsored by: PEG & Marine Fish Conservation Network

Two blue-ribbon commissions say our oceans are in trouble.  Globally, the majority of fish populations are overexploited, runoff pollution is creating vast dead zones, and global warming is causing the death of corals.

Now the Bush Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has proposed a rule that would gut the environmental review process for fishery management actions and limit the public’s right to participate in those decisions.

Tell NMFS to go back to the drawing board!  Our oceans deserve better.

Subject: MSA Environmental Review Procedures

Dear Director Risenhoover,

I'm deeply concerned about the impact of your agency's fishery management decisions on ocean ecosystems. I believe that strong environmental review is critical to the health of our oceans. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has made it possible to protect thousands of square miles of deep sea coral formations, save the lives of endangered sea turtles, begin rebuilding of depleted fish populations and facilitate meaningful public participation in fisheries management.

Unfortunately your agency's proposed NEPA rule hands over too much authority to fishery management councils that have a long history of poor management, significantly limits the public's ability to participate in fishery management decisions, and allows fishery managers to make decisions without fully considering the impacts on marine ecosystems including sea turtles, seals, corals and other precious ocean life.

Now is not the time to weaken the NEPA! Keep the NEPA strong, and invite public involvement into the process.

If we manage to kill the oceans, that will be the domino that will cause the colaspe of the entire world wide ecosystem, and weather patterns.

I STRONGLY believe that it is critical to keep a close eye on our fisheries to make sure that they are acting in an environmentally responsible way and consistently reviewing their impact on the marine habitat and its inhabitants. I do not believe that it is a good idea to leave them to their oversight - the Bush Administration is wrong to eliminate this critical review process and limit public involvement. There is too much at stake to drop this oversight - too much damage has been done to our planet already and now is the time to focus more and more on trying to reverse the damage already done and clean up our act. I urge you to do the right thing and reject this new potentially harmful NEPA rule. Thank you for your time and attention.

Please do all you can to protect our oceans. This is a vital part of our world and would have a devastating impact if destroyed. The beauty and life of the worlds oceans should be preserved for future generations.
