Doctor Wouldn't See Lesbian Couple's Infant Daughter

  • by: Michael McCarthy

An Oak Park, Michigan same-sex couple took their 6-day-old daughter to see pediatrician, Vesna Roi, at Eastlake Pediatrics in Roseville, Michigan. Although the doctor knew the couple were lesbians when they made their appointment, they were informed by another doctor at the clinic that Dr. Roi had prayed on the matter and decided she could not develop a doctor/patient relationship with the couple and refused to see their infant daughter.

While every person has the right to practice their religion in America, professionals who enter helping professions understand the Codes of Ethics of their professions before entering their respective fields. Both the AMA and AAP have ethical standards that prohibit its members from discrimination. Now that they are confronted with acting, they are claiming these ethical codes are advisory and not enforceable. What good is having a Code of Ethics if they are not actionable?
