EPA Needs to Hear From You Now on Smog Protections

  • by: Earthjustice

EPA is on the verge of strengthening smog protections that could save not only thousands of lives but billions of dollars. Don't let polluting industries weaken your right to clean air.

Ozone pollution, commonly referred to as smog, is a silent killer. It threatens the health of millions and is responsible for respiratory ailments, asthma attacks, and deaths.

EPA has just released a draft rule that proposes to strengthen the current ozone standard. But industry is fighting to stop the EPA from adopting any new standards.

That's why we need you to act now, while the EPA is taking public comment! Already big industrial polluters and their allies in Congress are using their power to oppose these health-protective standards.

Everyone has the right to breathe clean air. But we all need to fight for it.

Tell EPA to follow the science, which supports a 60 parts-per-billion ozone standard to protect people from asthma, heart attacks, and premature death.
Dear Gina McCarthy,

I write to urge the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to propose and adopt a ground-level ozone standard that is based upon the best available science on protecting public health. Ozone is considered the most widespread of air pollutants and is linked to asthma attacks, low birth weight in newborns, cardiovascular episodes, short-term memory loss, increased emergency room visits, and even death. The Clean Air Act requires that standards be based on what's needed to protect human health, especially the health of kids, seniors, and people with lung disease.

[Your comment will be added here]

EPA's own science advisors have repeatedly recommended that the current standard of 75 parts per billion fails to protect public health and should not even be considered. Please adopt a standard no less protective than the one the health and medical experts first recommended seven years ago--60 parts per billion.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
