Demand an end to Corporate Manifest Destiny and the placement of Old Hazeldell Rock Quarry on 'T.V. Butte' in the Historically Indigenous area of Oakridge, Oregon, USA

  • by: Tony Francisco
  • recipient: Send a word to United States President Barack H. Obama, Oregon Congressman Peter Defazio, State Senator Jeff Merkley, City of Oakridge Mayor Coey, developers Edward King and McDougall Brothers Construction, that disrespect of Indigenous Lands is no longer

Oakridge, Oregon has a history of bigotry and genocide of the Indigenous Persons who lived in the Oakridge area previous. Oakridge leaders should provide an olive branch of peace to the area in RESPECT of those who walked before and lived in harmony with the planet, not destroy and plunder. As educated persons in this new millenia, we understand all the damage done by past practices and do not desire to see these practices continue. WE, as a collective, strive to seek and implement procedure and practices that are in harmony with the planet we live on. This proposed Old Hazeldell Quarry is in an area of land harbors irreplaceable Indigenous history. here are seven known Indian graves documented in the TV Butte area. Tufti had two wives and children who died of tuberculosis. It is absolutely probable there are more that were not documented due to dangers of grave robbers. Indigenous people of this area were always buried with their finest possessions.

Warm Springs Tribal Code chapter 490 — Protection and Management of Archaeological, Historical and Cultural Resources states: “These cultural sites and materials include those associated with traditional foods, other natural resources, other sacred sites as designated by the Tribes, habitations and historical events and personalities. It is recognized that these are an invaluable, irreplaceable and endangered tribal resource.” There are noted Aboriginal Molalla burial sites near the project area, and possibly on the subject property and contiguous ownership. Archival research at the Lane County Historical Museum, shows that a “significant and irreplaceable section of the ‘Old Indian Trail’” is located in the boundaries of the area. “This trail is at least 500 years old and was used frequently by several tribes in the area.”
