The Police Department want to arrest the Avian Guardian Angel because she took these birds to the vet to have them looked at after they were found in a neglectful and abusive situation.

The birds were not stolen they were given away.

On January 25th a post came into a bird group I belong to. It stated that there were 2 Parrots, an African Grey and a Yellow Nape Amazon being held in an UnHeated Garage that was wide open and exposed to the -25 degree wind chills that night. The 2 birds were seen in the same cage near the doors of the garage with no food or water.
The lady who saw them went back the next day praying they were still alive. There were unforseen circumstances why she could not return that night with food and water for them.
To her surprise the birds were still alive and she was able to find someone at home. She told this person that she was going to call the police and report them for allowing these birds to suffer like this and that in a matter of hours they would probably be dead from the cold and no food.
The man told her to take the birds and that he was not happy they were there either.
She took them to her home and fed them and gave them water from what she told me. She later called me and asked me if i could take them to the Vet to make sure they were not sick.
I met with her in Framingham and took the birds to a Vet in Maynard, Ma. My own vet helped out by calling everyone they could in the general area to see who could see these birds right away. Dr. Stephan Dyer of the Phoenix Vet Hosp. agreed to see them.
From his report the African Grey was under weight. She weighed 290 grams and should be around 500 grams. She also had 2 old healed injuries. A fractured left wing and twisted right foot.
The Yellow Nape Amazon was over weighed.
They both showed signs of poor nutrition and vitamin deficiancies.
4 days later I asked my own vet to do a re-check on the Grey to see if she had gained any weight. I also had her do blood work. The lady who rescued the birds had asked me to return the birds to her and she would make sure they got a safe home.
After we got the blood test results I did just that.
In the meantime, another woman had gotten herself involved accidently. She was told of this through someone I had asked advise from. The phone number I had gotten was given to this person and she decided to call and leave her number with her. The lady who took the birds from the garage left her number instead of mine with the man who gave them to her.
Later that day, the owner of the birds through an interpreter called the contact wondering where the birds were. She told them they would be charged with abuse and neglect and that the birds were being taken to a vet for treatment.
The man told her they did not want to get into trouble and that they would sign the birds over to her and pay the vet bill. Neither of which they did. They were given the vets name and phone number to call and check on the birds and never called.
All of this took place of January 27th,2007. On February 7th almost 2 weeks later the owner called the police.
He tried to claim the birds were stolen from inside his home. he also tried to claim the birds were 10,000.00 show birds. I got a call from the contact person with a name and number for Officer Tibor. I called and left a message and I also wrote a written statement and sent it to him. I included the blood test results of the African Grey.
Both birds went back to the lady who rescued them from the garage. I have not heard from her since the blood test results and probably will not hear from her as long as the birds are safe.
The Police are threatening to arrest anyone involved in this. They have said that even the person who was just the contact on the phone who willingly gave information to the owner would be charged.
I took the birds to be treated at the vet. None of us did anything wrong. The birds were given to this woman by a person who at the time she did not know was not the owner. We later found this out when hte owner called the contact.
Why is it that the people who tried to save the birds from a certain death at the hands of this owner should suffer? He claims he put them in the garage because he was allergic to them. His supposed lawyer called the contact and offered her a 5,000.00 reward to tell him where the birds were.
I have never heard of any lawyer who would call anyone up and offer them a reward, I have never heard of an officer calling anyone and threatening to issue arrest warrants over the phone.
None of the people involved did anything wrong. The man who put these poor birds in that unheated garage is the one who is wrong here. He needs to look toward the man who gave the birds away if anything, not the ones who tried to save their lives!!
Please sign this petition and let the officer know how you feel about all this.
People who try to help should not be the ones to suffer!!!
