Proposed Federal Budget Cuts Important Programs!
Did you know that the US spends over $400 billion for Defense (not including the money spent on the war in Iraq). That is nearly 6 times the amount spent by the second biggest Defense spender and over 40 times more than the Axis of Evil spends together. By contrast, we spend only about $50 billion for all the K-12 education, alternative energy, children's health, world hunger and head start programs combined.
By cutting some fat off the Defense budget or by eliminating some of Bush's tax cuts, you would have enough to
cover all educational and health care costs, support alternative energy research and development,
and feed most of the world's hungry. Instead, the Bush plan promises to cut taxes and underfunded
programs to support another INCREASE in defense spending.
The Bush plan will result in reduced spending for programs that Americans want and expect like education, health, job training and employment, housing programmes and environmental protection. The ENVIRONMENT will be hit the hardest: EPA's budget cut by 7.2%, Department of Agriculture budget cut by 8.1%, money for endangered-species recovery efforts reduced by $9.8 million, and water quality programs cut 30%. From forest protection & Everglades restoration to oceans & wildlife protection, the budget President Bush has proposed to Congress puts protection of the nation's air, land, water and wildlife at risk, say environmental leaders.
SIGN NOW, tell the House and Senate Budget Committees to Oppose this
Budget!
Dear Decisionmakers,
I am writing to you to urge you to oppose the proposed Bush budget.
It does not reflect the priorities of the American people or address the needs of our nation. In fact, Bush's
proposed federal budget cuts funding where we need it most!
The US already spends over $400 billion for Defense. That is nearly 6 times the amount spent by the second biggest Defense spender and over 40 times more than the Axis of Evil spends together. By contrast, we spend only about $50 billion for all the K-12 education, alternative energy, children's health, world hunger and head start programs combined.
By cutting some fat off the Defense budget by only $50 Billion you would have enough to
cover all educational and health care costs, support alternative energy research and development,
and feed most of the world's hungry. Instead, Bush's new budget promises to cut taxes and many of these underfunded
programs to support another unnecessary INCREASE in defense spending. WE SAY NO!
The Bush plan will result in reduced spending for programs that we want and expect like education, health, job training and employment, housing programmes and environmental protection. We are particularly horrified by the persisent budgetary attacks on the environment: EPA's budget would be cut by 7.2%, Department of Agriculture would be cut by 8.1%, and money for endangered-species recovery efforts is reduced by $9.8 million.
It is time to get our priorities straight! We depend upon you to oppose this budget and instead create a budget that will address the needs and priorities of this nation.
Sincerely,
The undersigned
