Protect LGBT Floridians From Discrimination

In Florida, we know discrimination is wrong. Yet, under current state law, there are still no explicit protections barring discrimination against LGBT people. If you are gay or transgender, you can be fired from your job, denied housing or refused service in public spaces like restaurants and hotels simply because of who you are.

But the Competitive Workforce Act can change that. This proposed legislation would update Florida's non-discrimination laws to protect LGBT people in employment, housing and public accommodations in the Sunshine State.

A majority of Floridians agree discrimination is wrong and that employees should be judged on their qualifications and performance&dmash;not on who they are or whom they love. In fact, 75% of Fortune 500 companies already have LGBT-inclusive policies on the books prohibiting employment discrimination.

It's time for lawmakers to take action to bring state law in line with best business practices and Floridian values of fairness and respect. Sign the petition urging legislators to pass the Competitive Workforce Act in 2016.
To Florida legislators:

As a Floridian and your constituent, I am asking you to support HB45/SB120, the Florida Competitive Workforce Act (FCWA).

Discrimination is wrong—period. That's why leading businesses and a majority of Floridians agree it's time for state law to protect hard-working gay and transgender people from discrimination. This bill would not only help Florida businesses compete in a national and global marketplace, but would also ensure that Florida is a state where all people and families feel welcome, including those who are gay or transgender.

Comprehensive non-discrimination policies like the FCWA have been passed in 17 other states and mirror the policies of 75% of Fortune 500 companies. Now, it's time for Florida law to catch up by protecting gay and transgender people under state law so that we can attract top talent and compete in the global economy.

Please stand with the majority of Floridians who agree people in our state should be judged by their job performance and qualifications—and not based on who they are or whom they love.

Thank you for your consideration of this important piece of legislation.

Sincerely,
