Stop the Torture and Consumption of Dogs in Korea

Target: Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Han Duk-soo
Sponsored by: In Defense of Animals

Every year approximately TWO MILLION dogs are inhumanely caged, tortured and used for food in Korea! The dogs are crammed like vegetables into crates. When a customer makes a selection, the dogs are roughly yanked from the cage and intentionally abused before being slaughtered for the sale.

We are calling upon the Korean government to:
* enforce the existing law under the Korean Animal Protection Act, and
* to strengthen the existing law by amending it to unequivocally state that dogs and cats shall not be slaughtered for human consumption.

This practice of killing and eating dogs is not because of some long-standing cultural tradition. In fact, most Koreans find the cruelty and killing appalling. Yet it continues because it is backed by government indifference and because profit-driven industry forces aggressively promote the myth that eating severely mistreated dogs increases sexual potency.

Now is the time to stop this inhumane practice. Please join IDA and our Korean colleagues by signing this petition urging the Korean government to strengthen and enforce animal protection laws so that these cruelties can be brought to an end!

As an official with the power to make a difference, I urge you to please use your authority to support an amendment to strengthen Korea's Animal Protection Law to ban the torture, killing, sale and consumption of dogs and cats.

I am appalled and shocked to learn about the rampant cruelties inflicted upon animals that have been documented in Korea's live food markets. The dogs are raised in the most hideous and cruel environments, only to be beaten and slaughtered by the millions.

There is no appropriate animal protection legislation to prevent the prevailing animal cruelty currently taking place in Korea. As someone who believes strongly that animals should not be treated in this way, I have the following requests:

Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. All of the Dharma is based on Buddha's discovery that suffering is unnecessary: Like a disease, once we really face the fact that suffering exists, we can look more deeply and discover it's cause; and when we discover that the cause is dependent on certain conditions, we can explore the possibility of removing those conditions. Buddha taught many very different methods for removing the cause of suffering, methods appropriate for the very different types and conditions and aptitudes of suffering beings. For those who had the capacity to understand it, he taught the most powerful method of all, a method based on the practice of compassion. It is known as the Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, because practicing it benefits all beings, without partiality. It is likened to a vast boat that carries all the beings in the universe across the sea of suffering. Om Mani Padme Hum "Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus" the mantra associated with Avalokiteshwara (Quan Yin, Chenrezig, Kanzeon), the manifestation of Compassion. (Hail, or Homage to the jewel of the Eternal, Transcendent within the Lotus of Enlightenment). Om mani padme hum is the most important mantra in Buddhism. It is the six syllable mantra of the Bodhisattva of compassion Avalokiteshvara. Om purifies bliss and pride (realm of the gods) Ma purifies jealousy and need for entertainment (realm of the jealous gods) Ni purifies passion and desire (human realm) Pad purifies ignorance and prejudice (animal realm) Me purifies poverty and possessiveness (realm of the hungry ghosts) Hum purifies aggression and hatred (hell realm) 'With the Medicine Buddha mantra you can liberate numberless sentient beings from oceans of suffering and bring them to enlightenment.' - Lama Zopa. Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha BeKanze Radza Samudgate Soha In the Bhaiṣajyaguruvaidūryaprabharāja Sūtra, the Medicine Buddha is described as having entered into a state of samadhi called "Eliminating All the Suffering and Afflictions of Sentient Beings." From this samadhi state he spoke the Medicine Buddha Dharani.[1] namo bhagavate bhaiṣajyaguru vaiḍūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: oṃ bhaiṣajye bhaiṣajye mahābhaiṣajya-samudgate svāhā. The last line of the dharani is used as the Medicine Buddha's mantra. Medicine Buddha Sutra, as a bodhisattva who made 12 great vows. On achieving Buddhahood, he became the Buddha of the eastern realm of Vaidūryanirbhāsa, or "Pure Lapis Lazuli". The Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha upon attaining Enlightenment, according to the Medicine Buddha Sutra[1] are: To illuminate countless realms with his radiance, enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. To awaken the minds of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. To provide the sentient beings with whatever material needs they require. To correct heretical views and inspire beings toward the path of the Bodhisattva. To help beings follow the Moral Precepts, even if they failed before. To heal beings born with deformities, illness or other physical sufferings. To help relieve the destitute and the sick. To help women who wish to be reborn as men achieve their desired rebirth. To help heal mental afflictions and delusions. To help the oppressed be free from suffering. To relieve those who suffer from terrible hunger and thirst. To help clothe those who are destitute and suffering from cold and mosquitoes.

Their treatment of dogs and cats is barbaric. I am so disgusted at the government's heartless disregard for another life. How could so many people believe that beating a life, practically to death, would enhance virility? If anything, it makes for a psychotic mind set.

It is cruel beyond belief. I believe I speak for an infinite number of people when I say that the torture, killing, sale and further consumption of dogs and cats is appalling. I for one know that I will be checking for Korean products, and definitely will not be purchasing them.

I urge the Korean Government to strengthen the Korean Animal Protection Law to prevent animal cruelty and to introduce basic animal protection regulations. It must also provide penalties for violations and ensure that mistreated animals can be legally seized from abusers and given immediate refuge. 2. I request that the Korean Government create an enforceable law to ban the torture, killing, sale and consumption of dogs and cats. Without banning the dog and cat meat trade and amending the Animal Protection Law to the global standard, Korea will not enjoy the respect commensurate with the country's international stature. I will not buy Korean goods, support Korean businesses, or visit Korea until the horrors come to an end. CAROLINA IBARRA LEAL.

THe consumption of dog meat must be stopped because of the inhumane way the dogs are treated and killed. With no question of cultural tradition and no evidence backing the idea that consumption of meat from mistreated dogs enhances virility, there is no reason why this practice should continue.

GREAT QUOTES BY GREAT MINDS BELOW FURTHER SHOWS THE REASONS FOR CONCERN REGARDING ANIMALS, ENVIRONMENT, & THE FUTURE OF SOCIETY: ------- All the arguments to prove man's superiority cannot shatter this hard fact: in suffering the animals are our equals. ~ Peter Singer ------- Don't be intellectually static, evolve, be inspired and act with compassion... ------- The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. ~Gandhi (1869-1948) ------- The question is not Can they reason? Nor Can they talk? But Can they Suffer. ~ Jeremy Bentham, Philosopher ------- I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man. ~ M. Gandhi (1869-1948) ------- The measure of a society can be how well its people treat its animals. ~ Mohandas Gandhi ------- We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals. ~Immanuel Kant ------- The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. ~ Albert Einstein ------- A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ' Universe,' a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security. ~Albert Einstein ------- The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ~Alvin Toffler ------- When an animal is killed on purpose, the killers steal a life that is not theirs to take.
