Animal Welfare Matters to Animals, Canadian People and the Environment!

Target: Minister of International Trade, Minister of Justice, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of International Co-operation
Sponsored by: World Society of the Protection of Animals (WSPA)
Animals matter to people. They provide food, livelihoods and also companionship to billions of people around the world. And as sentient beings they can feel pain and can suffer. Yet, there is no global recognition for the importance of animal welfare. WSPA is working to address this by encouraging governments to adopt a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare at the United Nations.

How can we reduce poverty around the world and achieve food security for all without considering animals? How can we address the problems of climate change and environmental sustainability without considering the role that animals play?

Help us send a strong message to Canada's government that animals matter to Canadians. Ask the ministers responsible for Agriculture and Agri-Food, Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Justice to support this initiative in principle and participate in the process that will lead to a UN declaration.

Dear Minister,

I am writing to you as a concerned Canadian, one of the nearly half a million Canadians who supports humane societies and other animal protection organizations.

[Personalized comment here]

Animals matter. They matter to billions of people around the world who count on animals for companionship. They matter to people who depend on them for their livelihood. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the billion poorest people around the world are reliant on animals to supply their daily needs. Moreover, as sentient beings that can feel pain, their welfare matters.

Despite this, there is as yet no global recognition of the importance of animal welfare. To address this, some of the world's leading animal protection organizations, including the World Society for the Protection of Animals and, here in Canada, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies have proposed that a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) be adopted by the United Nations.

It's time for major shifts in socity's value system. People, animals, the environment need to all be valued and treated ethically. Are we not an educated, developed world of people by now!? It's time to become aware and have compassion for all living things...especially innocent animals.

The laws should be much harder for animal abuse. A man in Alberta got only a $5000 fine for starving over 100 Arabian horses, over 10 of them died. The laws are not tough enough in Canada and we have to do something about this to change this. If we can stop even a few sick people due to high fines and the perspective of a long time in prison it is worse it ! Animals are like children and depend on the folks looking after them . It is more than time for a change !

Animals are just as important to humans as anything else. They need our protection against poachers, hunters, etc. Most killings are for profit. Animals need laws that will protect them. When a human is killed or abused there are laws, yet when an animal is killed or abused it's okay and acceptable. This must stop. We need those animals and unless something is done to protect them they will be long gone for ever.

I may not be Canadian but I am sure that my opinion matters please be aware that all animals are just like humans without the voice, they have emotions and they can certainly feel pain! Please just take this into consideration I mean we waste our tax money on this researches that can tell if animals feel pain and yet it seems like if it goes in one ear and go out the other and it feels that you do not care about the well being of these innocent animals being brought into this world when they were not even intended to be here.

I don't know how you consider them as food! Most of the elderly would die of lonliness without the interaction of this animal. I would like to see the UDAW drawn up and adopted by the United Nations as well. Debra

I believe any living being on this planet can feel pain, emotional and physical. When I see another human being hurting an animal it makes me sick.
