Save hundreds of thousands of SF Bay Area trees on 2,000 acres from clearcutting that will INCREASE

The FEMA plan has been approved, and in August, the clear-cutting ("thinning") hundreds of thousands of healthy trees on 2000 acres across two counties and several cities, will begin, (plus massive herbiciding), destroying our beautiful East Bay hills wilderness parks. The East Bay Regional Parks, UC Berkeley, etc. have already started killing tall healthy trees.

Countless wild animals will die. Not one tree is scheduled to be planted.

We have no vote. This is against our will. Yet most people here have no idea what is about to happen. When we put leaflets up at trailheads, the rangers take them down.

Why would anyone kill these beautiful trees who are well-adapted to our semi-arid climate, especially in a drought when we desperately need them for cleaner air and to prevent climate change? The answer is that this plan is entirely about money. Nothing is needed to be done to the trees in our parks. They are no risk for fire.

Here is the updated information, including who to write to, such as the new Oakland mayor.

FEMA's goal is to eliminate forests and have “grassland with islands of shrubs" -- even though wildfires, like the firestorm 24 years ago that is the excuse for this project, start in grasslands. The fire department failed to put out the fire, yet all of us who will lose our parks will pay that price.

Magnificent Blue Gum Eucalyptus help prevent fires by precipitating inches of water from fog each year, filling creeks, adding to reservoirs, creating windbreaks, etc. Killing them will increase dry winds, air pollution, flammable grasslands, and more fire risk, as well as erosion and landslides.

It's unconscionable to kill healthy trees when  our native trees are dying from Sudden Oak Death. We need more tree diversity, not less.

Non-native humans have no right to kill non-native trees that provide food and homes for native animals. (Hypocrisy: most nativists prefer non-native plants for their yards.)

Learn from our native animals which trees they prefer. Raptors like eagles, hawks, owls, etc. prefer eucalyptus for nesting. Hummingbirds rely on eucalyptus flower nectar while Monarch butterflies use eucalyptus to rest in during migration.

Eucalyptus and the beautiful Monterey pines, Monterey cypress, and acacias are now an essential part of our eco-system. Monterey pine forests have far more bird and plant diversity than native forest.

Highly toxic herbicides will be used (how much has Monsanto, DOW, etc. influenced the FEMA decision?). How many cases of birth defects, cancer, neurological, and auto-immune illnesses will result.

Once our beautiful forests are destroyed, the wildlife will die from hunger and loss of habitat and we will be left with bare, ugly hillsides or poisoned stumps.

So PLEASE, help stop this disaster. Once our trees are gone, it'll be too late.

Update #28 years ago
From https://www.facebook.com/savetheeastbayhills?fref=nf

On Tuesday, the full Oakland City Council will vote on whether to proceed with the plan to deforest and poison the Oakland hills. If they do, the City will join the effort to clear cut 2,059 acres of forests and spread thousands of gallons of toxic herbicides in wildlife corridors, recreation areas, dog parks, and residential neighborhoods.

See details at Save the East Bay Hills site to write to the council.
