Tell Obama to Act Now to Protect Our Ocean

The National Ocean Policy and the smart ocean planning it supports have been under relentless attack from opponents in Congress. As a result, we lost the National Endowment for the Oceans, which would have expanded scientific research, restored our wetlands and watersheds, and protected endangered marine and coastal animals.

We can't let the partisan bickering in Congress continue to damage our ocean. That's why we're calling on the Obama administration to take immediate action.

We need them to move forward on implementing the National Ocean Policy, and to ensure that existing funding is directed towards smart ocean planning, and that federal agencies invest in smart ocean planning as part of their budgets.

Tell the Obama administration to take immediate action to protect our ocean.
Dear President Obama,

Subject: Please Continue to Support the National Ocean Policy

I am writing to thank the Administration for its strong defense of the National Ocean Policy (NOP) during conference negotiations on the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). I would ask that as we move forward and attacks on the NOP inevitably continue, that you continue to reaffirm the Administration's commitment to the NOP and use your administrative authority to direct funding towards development and long-term implementation of smart ocean plans.

The National Ocean Policy and the smart ocean planning it supports have been under relentless attack from opponents in Congress. Inclusion of anti-NOP riders in must-pass legislation has become standard operating procedure in the House. Your strong support helped defeat this rider in the WRDA bill, and will continue to play a critical role in defeating riders going forward.

While attacks on the Hill continue, several regions are making significant progress on the smart ocean planning that is a centerpiece of the NOP. Ensuring that these regions have the funding necessary to complete plans and to implement and adapt them through time is critical to the long term legacy of the NOP.

We need the Administration's support to ensure that existing grants and other federal funding sources are directed towards smart ocean planning. We also need the Administration's support to ensure that federal agencies invest in ocean planning as part of their baseline operating budgets. Smart ocean planning should be a fundamental part of the operations of all the agencies that have jurisdiction over federal waters, not a project that is seen as "extra".

Once again, I thank you for your support of the NOP during the WRDA process, and urge you to continue actively providing that support both in Congress and by using your administrative powers to ensure the funding resources for smart ocean planning.

Sincerely,
