Free human rights activist Atena Daemi

We call it posting, sharing, and liking. Iran are calling it a crime. 27-year old activist, Atena Daemi, is in prison right now.

Her "crime"? Social media posts — the kind of posts you and I probably make every so often.

Her trial apparently lasted no more than 15 minutes and took place at the same time as the trial of three others. After a 15 minute trial they've sentenced her to 14 years in prison.

Atena was arrested in October 2014, and kept in solitary confinement for 58 days. For nearly half of this time she was held in an insect-infected cell without toilet facilities.

She was blindfolded when she was interrogated. These sessions sometimes lasted for hours.

She was detained for 6 months before her short, unfair trial.

Atena simply expressed her opinion — she criticised executions and human rights violations in Iran. She is a prisoner of conscience, suffering simply for expressing her opinion.

Demand her release.
Your Excellency,

I respectfully urge you to release Atena Daemi immediately and unconditionally as she is a prisoner of conscience held solely for the peaceful exercise of her rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly.

I call on you to ensure that Atena Daemi receives any medical attention she may require;

Furthermore, I call on you to ensure that Articles 19, 21 and 22 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a state party, protect the right to freedom of expression, association, and assembly.
