Target:U.S. House of Representatives Sponsored by:Sierra Club
Before he left office, Bush-era Secretary of the Interior Dick Kempthorne ignored scientists and Congress and authorized destructive uranium mining on 1 million acres of land around the Grand Canyon. Soaring uranium prices have led mining companies to stake more than 10,600 claims on federal land - right along the Colorado River.
We can't let this uranium mining destroy the Grand Canyon! The mining would threaten the drinking water for 30 million people living in the western United States and could devastate tourism, which generates more than half a billion dollars for the economy.
Urge your Representative to work with new Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to permanently protect the Grand Canyon from uranium mining and pass the Grand Canyon Protection Act.
We took action on “Protect the Grand Canyon from Uranium Mining!”!

In all of my 18 years, I've visited the Grand Canyon twice - first on the South Rim, second on the North Rim. I hope to be able to visit this National Park many more times in the future, but how will mining affect such a beautiful place? The way I see it, private companies should not be allowed to mine here. If an ordinary park visitor were to deface even a tiny part of the 1 million acres claimed by the mining companies, that single visitor would no doubt be arrested. So why are you letting 1 million acres be defaced by mining companies? The illogic astounds me.

We need to preserve the natural beauty of this planet. The more we destroy, the less our children and there children will have. When will we realize, we have enough?!!!

I have never visited this area of the country but I am always appalled by any laws or allowances to purposely allow people to have known harmful substances very near to where they live to ultimately poison them and their children. It is a sin and someone needs to be held accountable for knowingly putting us in harm's way.

As a citizen of North America, the decision for mining for uranium at the Grand Canyon concerns me, specifically how what will happen to the water quality. I don't believe that as a Canadian, I have a place in suggesting how you govern your country, but I urge you to consider the following:
Some economists, environmentalists and others have argued that water will be the next "oil" in this century. With ever decreasing sources for clean and safe drinking water and water with which to grow food.... I would hope that the representatives ask themselves whether this project makes sense? I would hope that they could see that the decision to move ahead allowing uranium mining would be counter to the needs of the communities and millions of people that rely on this water source... never mind the terrible impact it would have on one of the greatest natural treasures the United States has to offer. As a tourist, I would certainly not want to pay to come visit a mining site. I would sadly strike that off my list of places to go visit when I travel. I have seen what mining, even on a small scale, does to the landscape, it isn't pretty and it isn't saleable as a tourist destination. It would be a tremendous loss to the heritage of your children. Please, consider protecting something of great beauty and tremendous inherent and economic value over that of the limited benefactors of the uranium mining. Thank you.

You would think that at least our drinking water and the air that we breathe would be the most important priority in our world, but unfortunately it isn't. Big interest groups let profit cloud their respect and protection of our precious environment. We need to stop these mining companies from destroying our earth and hurting the people on it.

"The costs of doing business are destroying everything that is healthy and beautiful? Think again, with all the water in the world – who would have thought today it, is a precious resource?" There is a saying “What comes around goes around”. What will you get when it comes around?

The Grand Canyon is much need ecosystem which supports varied life in its surroundings near and far. Please do your best to stop any and all uranium mining in and around this area as well other similar ecosystems around USA and elsewhere if possible. Thanky you in advance for your efforts in this respect.

The destruction of the lands in and around the Grand Canyon and Colorado River by the mining of Uranium is something that should not be tolerated. These areas of natural beauty were created for people to enjoy, not corporations to exploit and destroy. Along with this land, how much additional destruction will be done with the mined uranium and its byproduct, depleted uranium, which is used in military weapons and left in areas all around the world to cause leukemia, cancer and other diseases, especially in children.
For all the above reasons, this mining must be stopped.

Shame on the previous Secretary of the Interior for allowing those mining claims! I'll bet his drinking water was not likely to be affected, but millions would have theirs affected. Please update that very old mining law.

Lets put a stop to this. The benifits are not worth the risk of 30million peoples lives due to contanimation of their drinking water. not to mention what it will do to the tourism that brings in so much money, needed, for the economy. It is one of seven wonders of our world. lets it that way.
Thank you
