Stop the Contracted Killing of Wolves in Idaho!

The U.S Forest Service (USFS) has ignored their own wilderness management policy and allowed the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) to send a trapper out to exterminate two wolf packs deep within the vast Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.

The future of wolves in Idaho is grim if we don’t act against their brutal anti-wolf agenda. There isn’t any time to lose – as you read this, the state's hit man is out laying his traps which by Idaho law can be left unchecked for up to 72 hours – leaving anything caught to bleed to death or succumb to exposure while waiting to be shot by the returning trapper.
I urge you to immediately prohibit Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) from utilizing national forest lands and facilities in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area for the state's wolf eradication program. By allowing wolf eradication actions to occur in this wilderness area, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has disregarded its own predator policy as set forth in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Management Plan, failed to appropriately consider the environmental impacts of this action and chose to forgo public input.

As the manager of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area, it is your agency's responsibility to enforce the spirit and the letter of the Wilderness Act and ensure that actions by any party will not have adverse impacts on the area's wilderness character, the environment and wildlife. By allowing IDFG access to USFS land to eliminate two entire wolf packs based upon a very general Memorandum of Understanding with the state and by waiving any necessary permits with no environmental analysis or public input, your agency has violated standard Forest Service administrative procedures and demonstrated an alarming lack of due diligence in managing this controversy.

IDFG instructions to its contractor to remove two entire wolf packs in this wilderness area will eliminate one of the key components of this ecosystem, an apex predator, from the Frank Church Wilderness Area. Furthermore, in granting this request for access without any environmental review, the USFS did not consider the significant benefits to ecosystems from predators, nor evaluate IDFG claims of potential benefits to prey from predator removal.

Again, I urge you to follow USFS policies and immediately prohibit IDFG from using national forest lands in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area for their misguided wolf eradication program.
