If you read Campbell's Code of Business
Conduct and Ethics on the company website (http://www.CampbellSoup.com), you
might think that this is a first class company always striving to do
the right thing. Note for instance the following statement from
Campbell President and CEO Douglas R. Conant: "At Campbell Soup
Company, we are committed to conducting every aspect of our business in
compliance with the law and the highest ethical standards. This
commitment is a source of pride and strength for our company and for
every Campbell employee."
Last year, a young bull fractured his leg while struggling to break free
from a bucking strap firmly cinched around his abdomen and groin. This
incident typifies the trail of broken bones, shattered skulls, and severed
spines recorded at rodeos nationwide. Animals are slammed to the ground and
smashed against walls before they're dragged from the ring. Merciful
euthanasia is rarely an option. Battered animals linger in pain all the way
to the slaughterhouse.
While the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PCRA) and International
Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) claim to provide onsite veterinarians,
the incidence of grievously wounded animals remains high. Consequently,
animal welfare organizations around the world denounce the rodeo.
At the very least, I ask you to view the evidence. If Campbell Soup Company
executives are confident rodeo animal abuse does not exist, why do they
rebuff offers to meet with SHARK, the animal protection organization with
ample documentation of rodeo cruelty?
As a consumer, I urge you to place Campbell's good name behind an ethical
endeavor. If rodeo's victims were dogs or cats, perpetrators would be
arrested on animal cruelty charges.
We strongly urge the Campbell Soup Company to cease its sponsorship of rodeos, via its subsidiary Pace Foods.
Sincerely,
