Give Greater Yellowstone Wolves a Lasting Future

In March 2008, the Bush/Cheney Administration eliminated Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies. For months, wolves were slaughtered… until Defenders of Wildlife and our conservation allies prevailed in court and restored federal protections for these magnificent animals.

But in its final hours in power, the outgoing Bush/Cheney Administration attempted to once again remove wolves from the list of federally protected species. President Obama has temporarily suspended the Bush/Cheney wolf proposal, and now we need your help to encourage federal officials to adopt a more responsible wolf management plan in its place.

Please urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to adopt a responsible management plan for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies. We need to ensure a lasting future for these amazing animals.

Subject: Wolves in the Northern Rockies

Dear Secretary Salazar,

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and someone concerned about the future of wolves in the Northern Rockies and Greater Yellowstone region, I applaud the Obama Administration's decision to suspend plans to prematurely remove gray wolves in the area from the list of federally protected threatened and endangered species.

I hope that you will use this opportunity to ensure that states adopt post-delisting management plans that ensure that wolves are fully recovered with healthy, sustainable and diverse population levels before federal protections for these wolves are removed. Officials in Idaho and Wyoming have made it clear that they intend to "manage" wolves at the lowest level permitted by law, a policy that will likely result in the removal of two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming and all but approximately 100 wolves in Idaho.

I also hope that you will be able to tap into your understanding of these complex issues in the West -- given your history as a former U.S. Senator for a Rocky Mountain state -- and work with conservationists, states, ranchers and other interested parties to craft a science-based, responsible and balanced federal management strategy that will benefit wolves, ranchers, hunters, Northern Rockies residents and all Americans who care deeply about wildlife conservation.

I welcome you to your new position in the Interior Department, and I look forward to hearing about the successful changes that your department will be making to protect our country's wonderful natural heritage and wildlife.
