Treat pets more humanely

Local Animal Shelter kills family pet

I was volunteering for a Animal Shelter on Jan. 20, 2006 when one of the Control Officers went to pick up a trap in an area she has been before. She told me the last time she picked up a cat that was trapped there before had scratched her when she tried to get it out of the cage. So she wasn't taking any chances with this cat and killed it when she got back. Then about an hour later the lady that owned the cat called to claim it, but it was too late.

Then the supervisor said to check to see if it had a chip and to photograph the cat along with the scratches she had on her arms from the last cat she picked up.

The following morning when I get to work they are setting up new cages in the cat room. I remembered what the supervisor had told me when I asked if it was possible to add more cages for the cats (he said they had no room) then I realized what was going on. He said they would hold the cats for 3 days unless it was feral or they had no room. Well there was plenty of cages empty but he must have told his supervisor that they didn't have room and that is why all of a sudden they had more cages. Then he made it clear to me that he wasn't going to keep them full.

The supervisor and animal control officer that had killed the cat said " they thought it was feral and that is why they put it down" and my reply was "how do you know the difference between a cat that is scared to death and one that is feral?" There was no reply, they just changed the subject.

Later that day I heard them talking about giving that woman a fine for letting her cat run free. They decided against it.

I don't know who the woman is that lost her pet to such an injust tragedy but there was quite a cover up and then they sat around laughing about it.

This animal shelter is just a slaughterhouse...they are not helping the problem but adding to it. It needs to end now. Please write to the city mayor, city council and city manager about the injustice done here. As long as they get away with it it will continue.
