Oppose the Destructive Practice of Mountaintop Removal Mining

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
Mountaintop removal is exactly what it sounds like: Mining companies clearcut native forests and blow off mountaintops with explosives to uncover thin seams of coal, then dump millions of tons of the waste rock into the valleys below, permanently burying streams.

This devastating practice, the nation's most destructive form of coal mining, poisons drinking water, lays waste to wildlife habitat, increases risk of flooding and wipes out entire communities.

Please urge your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R. 2169), which would protect Appalachia's streams by restoring the prohibition on using waste to fill streams and wetlands.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Mountaintop removal is the nation's most destructive form of coal mining. Mining companies clearcut native forests and use explosives to blow off mountaintops to uncover seams of coal. To minimize waste disposal costs, they then dump millions of tons of the waste rock into the valleys below, permanently burying streams. This devastating practice destroys ancient mountains, buries streams and lays waste to wildlife habitat. The blasting, coal dust, poisoned drinking water, and increased flooding ruin the quality of people's lives and dramatically reduce the value of their property. Please co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act, H.R. 2169, to stop this destruction.

Generations of people have been living in these communities that are being completely destroyed. I've talked to people there that say many areas look like war zones. There are thriving communities with rich cultural heritages that are being broken apart and devastated by these unnecessary and brutally harmful techniques of mining. It is the right and moral thing to do to stop it now.

What do you and these companies have against clean drinking water? When they form their bonds for reclimation why isn't protection of water and eroision control part of the process? Is it becasue it is so easy to clean up water and un-do the damage that these company's cause? You must condone the behaviour because it continues to happen. What ever happed to doing the right thing because it was the right thing to do? Maybe we will just have to focus on how history remembers you.

Mountaintop removal smacks of same destructive processes that have devastated countless natural areas in the name of greed.
