Tell President Obama to Take Bold Action on Nuclear Disarmament

Speaking in Prague shortly after taking office, President Obama said, "As the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it."

However, since then, money spent on modernizing our nuclear weapons arsenal has only increased.

If the U.S. is truly going to lead on this issue, President Obama must take tangible actions, including taking nuclear weapons off high-alert status, convening negotiations to end the nuclear arms race and acheive nuclear disarmament, and reallocating the proposed $1 trillion in expeditures on modernizing the nuclear arsenal to more vital human needs nationally and internationally.

As we head into President Obama's final year in office, tell him to take bold action to help make a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons.
Dear President Obama,

As you approach your final year in office, we strongly encourage you to take bold action to move forward "the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons," which you envisioned in your 2009 Prague speech. We agree that "as the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it."

Specifically, we urge you to take the following critical actions:

- Take the U.S. nuclear arsenal off high-alert status.

- Convene and participate in negotiations to end the nuclear arms race and to achieve nuclear disarmament, as required by Article VI of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

- Stop nuclear modernization programs and allocate the proposed $1 trillion in expenditures on modernizing nuclear weapons to meeting vital human needs, nationally and internationally.
