Educators & Community Members: Pledge to prevent gun violence, not just prepare for active shooters.

Educators are not content to engage our students in frightening drills necessitated by preventable societal conditions. We are determined to change those conditions.

You train us and our students to “Run, hide, fight” from gun violence in schools. We are determined to “Call, write, meet” with lawmakers who endanger our safety by failing to pass gun safety legislation.

School districts nationwide are requiring educators to engage in active shooter drills in order to prepare for potential gun violence.

Educators work proactively to set students up for success, including by providing physically and emotionally safe environments. We do not only react to crises. We set conditions to keep our students out of crisis.

We call on every educator to take action to put pressure on elected officials to pass common sense gun safety laws, every time they are required to spend time in training or drills for active shooters.

We call on every educator to demonstrate their disapproval that our valuable time is being spent on preparing for active shooters, by leaving work 10 minutes early, each time a drill or training is required, and reclaiming that time for activism to promote legislation addressing gun violence.

Please sign this petition to pledge your support.

If you are a community member, sign to pledge your support to educators taking a stand, and join us to “Call, write, meet” your representatives in support of gun safety laws.
If you are an educator, sign to pledge that you will “Call, write, meet” your representatives every time you are required to prepare for potential gun violence. (Call the Capitol Switchboard to reach your US Senators and Congressperson: (202) 224-3121)
If you are an administrator, teacher leader, or teachers’ union leader, commit to encouraging your colleagues to leave work 10 minutes early on active shooter training or drill days to demonstrate your disapproval of permissive gun laws.
