Protect Utah National Parks from Coal Plant Haze Pollution

Utah's national parks like Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef are a national treasure, attracting tourists from across the country. So why would we let dirty coal plants dump their pollution on them?

Two dirty coal plants in Central Utah, owned by Rocky Mountain Power and their parent company, Pacificorp, churn out the pollution that threaten our health and contribute to climate change. This same pollution also makes the skies hazy.

And when coal pollution haze affects our national parks, it turns some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet into a cloudy haze.

Fortunately, the EPA and the Utah Division of Air Quality review haze conditions in our parks and will soon be proposing new protections, requiring these two coal plants to clean up. Meanwhile Pacificorp is doing its best to escape responsibility for their pollution — pushing for no action at all. But you can stop them. Demand action to protect our parks!

Don't let Utah's parks get dumped on by dirty coal. Tell EPA and Utah Division of Air Quality to propose strong haze protections for our parks.
Dear EPA,

Clean air and clear views of Utah's iconic landscapes are very important to me.

I support strong pollution cuts from Utah's biggest sources of air pollution: coal-burning power plants. We have an opportunity to address air pollution through Utah's Regional Haze plan. The plan is designed to limit tiny but dangerous airborne particles from coal plants which cause serious health problems and reduce visibility in our national parks and beyond.

As it is, Utah's Regional Haze plan will not require any pollution cuts from two big Rocky Mountain Power coal plants in central Utah. I would like to urge state officials to reconsider that — and specifically to require the significant reductions in pollution consistent with industry-standard technology, as has been done for coal plants in Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. Other coal plants around the West are cutting haze-causing pollution by 80-90%, whereas Utah lags behind, requiring only 30-40% reductions from two of its dirtiest plants.

Please require the best possible reductions in air pollution from Rocky Mountain Power's coal plants. I believe that investing in cleaner energy generation is vital for our families' health and to protect our parks' iconic views and the tourism and recreation dollars they help generate.
