DOES IT TAKE A DEATH TO MAKE IT HAPPEN??? Help to keep us all Safe by Asking SCC to take action and put Pedestrian Crossing and Re-Labeling of Road signs and parking restrictions infront of St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School on Linkfield lane REDHILL

Linkfield Lane in Redhill is a very busy road and can be dangerous for pedestrians (School children and Adults) in front of St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School especially during school term time on the hours of dropping off to school and pick up time.

This problem is getting worst as the School is Expanding the number of Student intake per year as Planned by Surrey County Council .

I personaly have experienced in 2 occations with my children that we nearly got hit by Car that was driving too fast ignoring us trying to cross in front of St. Joseph's School as we come from the other side of the road (Via North Street junction). The crossing in front of Donyngs is never enough to keep everyone safe.

Here are more very serious issues.

1) People are parking Ilegally by the dedicated Coach bay

2) When the Coach bay is misused at many times, Coach are ending up parking in the middle of the road to Unload or pick up childrens as a result All thease children's are being put at risk of potential danger.

3) People are parking by the ZigZag Lines by the school entrance.

4) During peak times people are double parking by the side of the school next to the Coach bay resulting long tailback that causes obstructions all the way back to the Red Lion Pub Roundabout causing more delays and potential danger to the wider community not just for the parents and children's of St. joseph's School.

5) Some parking spaces outside the school are meant to be for 30mins maximum stay and not for long term parking but People ar over staying, then going up to the playground while they are waiting for their children to come out to the playground which is unacceptable, and this  leads to other people missusing the Coach bay.

We would like to ask SCC to review this road and put a pedestrian crossing and Re-label the parking signs and put extra restrictions and penalty to avoid ilegal parking in front of the school.

Concerned parents like me are asking for your support and cooperation for the safety of everyone.

DOES IT TAKE A DEATH TO MAKE IT HAPPEN???

Does it take a death to make it happen?

Sustainable Transport Team,

Surrey County Council

 14th October 2015

Dear Sir/Madam,

We, as concerned parents of children’s at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Linkfield Road Redhill Surrey, are writing to you for your help and support to make Linkfield Road a safer place to drop-off and pick-up our children.

From September 2016, as the School and Surrey County Council planned expansion of the school begins, we will have continuously increasing numbers of parents attempting to access the school at peak times. Once complete, the fully expanded school will have a further 210 pupils, bringing the total to 630. The current system is an accident waiting to happen, and we need to take action now, both for our current pupils and those who will be coming to the expanded school.

The key issues we wish to present to the Council are listed below.

During peak time parents/public are:

  • Parking illegally in and around the dedicated Coach Bay. This illegal parking means the coach cannot access the bay and is often forced to double-park in the middle of the road. Children accessing the coach must then either negotiate the parked cars, or even worse, go into the road to access the coach, putting them in serious danger.

  • Parking on the yellow zigzag lines by the school entrance.

  • Double-parking by the side of the school, next to the Coach bay, resulting in a long tailback that causes obstructions all the way back to the Red Lion Pub roundabout. This causes delays and potential danger to the wider community, not just the parents and children of the school.

  • Abusing the 30-minute parking spaces outside the school. People are parking there for considerably longer, while they either wait in the car or in the playground for their children. For there to be sufficient parking at peak times - and to ensure the coach bay is not misused - these spaces must be labelled as being for quick drop-off and pick-up only, to ensure there is a flow of traffic. For longer-term parking parents must be made to use the Donyngs car park.

For school pupils, parents, and the wider community who use this road, we need to address these issues, and fast. Clearly, we need to continue to educate parents via the channels available to use school access correctly, but the Council must also be brought to accept responsibility for ensuring all possible road safety rules are in place.

We believe a review by the Council is required and would suggest the following as the best way to achieve greater safety:

  • A second pedestrian crossing outside the school. The Donyngs crossing is not sufficient.

  • A re-labelling of the parking signs to provide greater restrictions, both in the spaces and coach bay, with the risk of penalty if ignored.

For the school if it is possible to include in the expansion building plans, making the car park by the school office large enough for the coach to park there instead (use the wasted grass space at the top there). Then the current coach bay could be made into diagonal spaces for cars strictly for drop off/pick up purpose only.

We have set up an online petition - with 103 signatures so far - to present to Surrey County Council. With the support and the backing of the school, we are requesting you to take action now.

Thank you for your time in reading this letter and we look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Dennis Nelson Ong
