Stop the District of Elkford from killing the town deer and encourage better consultation with local

The District of Elkford has decided, despite dissent from residents, to kill up to 50 mule deer who are inhabiting the town.

The District of Elkford began culling mule deer under the licence issued by the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources and Operations. The license allows the District to kill up to 50 mule deer with the use of a clover trap and bolt gun. These are healthy deer.

Already, the contrator has had his licence suspeded for killing outside the prescribed hours.  Despite that, the town has been quoted as saying: “the urban deer harvest is proceeding well minus the unfortunate issue with the contractor trapping in the day light".  The town also appears to feel that they are getting a lot of support via phone, and only a minority of dissenters are using social media.

Several environmental groups are protesting the cull and there needs to be more investigation into better ways to discourage the deer from coming in to town.  Lax wildlife management has led to local feeding of the deer, which of course has encouraged them to become used to human contact and the town environment.

Please sign the petition to encourage the District of Elkford to rethink its approach to the management of its deer population.  The town has always promoted itself as:  "Elkford remains a place where nature prevails - and humanity borrows a bit of space".

How hypocritical can they get?
