Instead, millions of acres of forests have been set ablaze in Malaysia and Indonesia to make way for massive plantations to grow the palm, the oil from which is used in everything from snack foods to shampoo.
Experts say that slash-and-burn palm oil developments have created choking smoke that now jeopardizes the health of
half a million people and scorching fires that threaten to consume the forest homes of
one third of the planet’s remaining wild orangutans.

Right now, slash-and-burn palm operations are choking the skies of Southeast Asia and threatening the health of half a million people. Millions of acres of forests, which are important sinks for carbon pollution, are being lost to the global demand for palm oil. And the forest homes of one third of the planet’s remaining wild orangutans are at risk.
This is ecological nightmare demands decisive action. I hope you will do all you can to reduce demand for palm oil by prohibiting the import of palm oil and palm oil products that are not responsibly sourced.
