GOP: If It's Not Consensual, It's Rape

Rape is a simple concept: It is any instance when sex is not consensual. That includes when someone drugs a victim or gets him or her drunk, and when someone has sex with a minor.

But not according to the GOP, which is seeking to legally change the definition of rape to restrict access to abortion.

For decades, the ban on federal funding for abortions has included exceptions for victims of rape and incest. But if the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" passes, only women who are raped by force would qualify to use federal funds to end the resulting pregnancy. It also would limit the incest exception to girls under 18.

These new "definitions" of rape and incest are a dirty trick by anti-choice proponents to restrict abortion access.

Tell your representatives to vote NO on this bill and protect the definition of rape and the women who are victims of it.
Dear [Decision Maker],

I am horrified and disappointed in the recent GOP attempts to restrict access to abortion by redefining the definitions of rape and incest. I urge you to protect the definitions and the women who suffer from these horrible acts and vote NO on the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act."

Rape is sex that is not consensual. That includes when a victim is drugged or plied with alcohol. It also includes statutory rape. Moreover, incest is not a crime limited to women under 18. Not matter how old they are, a woman should be able to get the means to terminate a pregnancy that results from sex with a relative.

Redefining the meaning of "rape" is nothing more than an underhanded way to restrict abortion. Do not allow the victims of date rape, statutory rape and other sexual crimes to be pawns in the political fight over abortion. Vote NO on the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act."
