Keep Loaded Guns Out of Our National Parks

Target: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar
Sponsored by: Care2.com

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has been pushing hard to allow loaded guns in America's national parks. Under intense political pressure by the NRA, the Bush Administration finalized new regulations in December that will allow visitors to carry loaded, concealed firearms in national parks.

But the NRA is trying to fix a problem that does not exist. Under the current firearm regulations – which were updated under the Reagan Administration – it is not unlawful to have firearms in national parks; they just have to be unloaded and safely stowed. It is a limited and reasonable requirement that enables rangers to do the job of protecting park resources and ensuring visitor safety.

Please sign our petition to the new Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, and urge that the Obama Administration reverse this terrible regulation that will make our beautiful national parks less safe for our wildlife and our families.

Good news! A federal judge yesterday blocked a federal rule allowing people to carry concealed, loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges. She has called on the Interior Department to review the rule and indicate its course of action in response to the injunction.

Thank you for your interest. We will keep you updated on this issue, and provide future opportunities for you to speak out for park safety.

Dear Interior Secretary Ken Salazar,

I am deeply troubled by a December regulation that passed during the Bush Administration allowing loaded firearms in our national parks. These changes will make poaching of park wildlife easier, change the relationship between rangers and visitors and create new safety hazards. There are meaningful and reasonable rules already in place since 1983 that allow gun owners to safely stow their unloaded weapons while in national parks. I do not believe this is too much to ask.

The current regulations, which were updated under the Reagan Administration, have been successful at maintaining our national parks as safe family destinations. In fact, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report, there were 1.65 violent crimes per 100,000 national park visitors in 2006 -- making national parks some of the safest places in the United States.

I urge you to reverse this terrible regulation, and restore the safety of our national parks for our wildlife and our families.

There is no reason for guns in the parks. Stop the insanity and change the law back to what it was. do we have to wait until a few tourists are killed before we recognize the insanity of allowing guns where they should not be used? as for the animals, does it make sense to allow guns in a place intended as a safe haven for them? protect the tourists and the animals, no guns in state parks!

I am concerned about the safety of humans as well as wildlife if loaded firearms are to be allowed in our national parks. I feel that this only invites future trouble and leaves me feeling unsettled. Loaded firearms have their place, but not in our national parks.

my husband and I camped at a national park approximately 2 years ago. It was the most terrifying experience. A group of men camping next to us were drinking by their campfire for sometime and decided to pull out there guns in the middle of the night and started shooting up in the air. These men were drunk and had loaded guns in their hands. Crazy and Dangerous! It was only my husband & I. We left as fast as we could. No one should have to feel the fear of being harmed. This includes animals.

Firearms should not be allowed at all. However, since unloaded guns are permitted - let's keep it at that. Having loaded guns will lead to accidental or intentional gun shot wounds or death of park rangers and/or park visitors and/or park wildlife. It is not the firearm that is ultimately at fault but the person who has access to that firearm. Reasonable people and become unreasonable people. Emotionally / mentally healthy people can become ill or disturbed when pushed. Having to take the time to get the gun and load it might just be enough time for sensible thinking to occur - thereby preventing a tragedy.

The wildlife of our country needs protection as they are greatly becomming fewer and fewer as we continue to domesticate and overtake rural areas and turn them into suburbias. One place that wildlife still has a refuge in is our protected national parks. We need to keep that protection for the sake of these wildlife animals and to help maintain the natural balance to life.

I cannot understand why on earth someone would feel they need a loaded gun in a national park. This is a pointless push that will only result in unnecessary violence.

Why do you need to carry fire arms to a public park are you just that violent of a person. Those who are doing it should ask themselves that question. God intended hunting only for food not for sport or personal gain.So since you have food in the stores there is no need for it.Too many innocent people have died because of hunters. Its not the guns that kill its the mind of the violent person ho feels the need to hunt in a public place.

Keep the national parks free from loaded firearms. These parks should be a place where people feel the chances of an accident involving a gun are low and that all reasonable precautions are taken to insure this. These parks are visited by many children and families and the potential trauma to a child and/or adult, due to some incident involving a gun, should be prevented as much as possible. Such precautions will also better protect our wildlife, which are a national treasure as well.

To Whom It May Concern: As history proves, it is already too easy for poachers and those who delight in the taking of human life to enter our National and State Parks with loaded weapons. Please take the necessary steps to help our Park Rangers to do their already tough, and sometimes thankless job of protecting life; human and wildlife. Sincerely, Chaplain Nolan A. National Parks are parks and should be kept so. National Forests are already available for shooting on. We don't need to have National Parks with guns too.

Around where I live in upstate NY, we have something called hunting season. Responsible deer management programs encourage the control of the deer population. (Which we need because we killed off the natural predators!) WHy you would "need" to be able to carry a loaded gun in a national forest is beyond me and obviously a poachers dream. Please reverse this regulation and once again prohibit loaded weapons in our national parks. My children and I thank you.
