The Australian New South Wales government is currently inquiring into the greyhound racing industry. It is considering recommendations 'to help strengthen the greyhound racing industry' published in a report by the Select Committee on Greyhound Racing in NSW on 16 October 2014. The report looks at various financial incentives that would help to sustain the industry, including the government providing $154 million to the industry through differential tax rates. It was estimated that the industry contributed $144 million to the state's economy in 2009-10.
The disgraced greyhound racing industry sees:
- 20,000 greyhounds bred for racing per year, approximately 18,000 of those end up being 'discarded'
- brutal live baiting of small animals by tying them to a post that travels at high speeds to be chased and mauled alive
- 5 greyhounds killed every week on the race track
- drugging and doping of racing dogs with dreadful and sometimes deadly side effects
Sign this petition to tell the government that:
- we don't want to encourage/ grow/ support an industry that treats animals in such inhumane ways
- we don't want our hard earned tax dollars spent on sustaining or growing an industry whereby the social, moral and gambling costs outweigh the impact the industry has on the state's economy
- we don't want live exports of greyhounds because we do not support further cruelty to these animals during their shipment or life overseas
- any money spent on the industry should be with a view to phase out the racing of greyhounds and re-home as many of them as possible (39 states in the U.S. have already made greyhound racing illegal for good reason!)
- this is a nationwide issue that requires federal intervention
