Insist on Environmental Review Before Utah Drilling Lease Auction
Target:Selma Sierra, Utah State Director, Bureau of Land Management Sponsored by:Care2
The Bureau of Land Management is trying to push a controversial oil and gas drilling lease in Utah through before the end of the Bush administration's time in office.
The BLM's plan to sell oil and gas drilling leases for nearly 360,000 acres near Arches, Canyonlands and Dinosaur National Monument in Utah on December 19 means that any potential leasers could begin irreversible wilderness destruction before the Obama administration comes into office.
And these leases aren't even necessary! Already, the Bush administration has leased almost 27 million acres of onshore public lands for oil and gas drilling - that's larger than the state of Kentucky. But many aren't being developed. We should not be opening more federal land to drilling when existing resources are sitting unused - especially when a proper environmental review hasn't occurred!
Tell the BLM: Remove the Utah parcel from the December 19 auction until the National Park Service can properly investigate the environmental impact of drilling on that land!
We took action on “Insist on Environmental Review Before Utah Drilling Lease Auction”!

If there is nothing wrong with this plan then what's the rush to jam it through. Allow for proper review of this plan and keep the people of this nation informed about the progress.

In 50 years, the extraction industries will be going extinct and we'll be using solar & wind energy. Why degrade our environment when we can invest in renewable energy instead and reduce the fouling of our air, water & land?

Please utilize the environmental impacts report process. Our country has worked hard to develop these processes. For the government to undermine a fair and just review of land becoming available for lease would be an embarassment with possible detrimental effects to this fragile and cherished landscape.

Please, in the name of conservation of our national resources do not allow this to happen without EIR's and studies on how this will effect the wildlife and scenic beauty of this wilderness.

We must halt the potential destruction of our natural habitats, and reverse the downward spiral of species extinction and callous disregard for our planet's very existence. Now is the time. There is no excusing last minute bamboozling on the Bush administration's watch. As a matter of fact, it is the lack of watching anything but "terorrism" that is the legacy of this damaging presidency. Let the new president decide what to do about energy needs of this country. In the meantime, let the National Park Service do a thorough study of the future effects of outdated fossil fuel searching (and destroying of the environment) in the beautiful natural habitats still left to us and our grandchildren.

This issue is extremely important to me. In these times of wildlife habitat degradation and species extinctions, careful environmental reviews are necessary to ensure preservation of our precious natural resources.

The proposed drilling is unacceptable so close to our national parks. They are all we have and we should want to preserve the asthetic beauty of such places for future generations. Are we so desperate that this is what we HAVE to do? Any environmental reprucussions that will happen will be located right within these wonderful and diverse national parks, places that are supposed to be protected for future generations to enjoy. Think hard about what you are proposing and read everyone of these comments, hopefully you will see the light. Think of our planet as a fuctioning system full of living human and nonhuman beings all trying to live together, we all work together to make the system work. peace and unity...
