Help Save the American Bison

  • by: WWF
  • recipient: National Park Service
Today the largest remaining wild herd of American bison consists of only about 4,500 individuals.

Several Native American tribes are working with WWF to help restore bison to native lands. But before the bison can be fully reintroduced, they must be separated from other wildlife to ensure they are healthy.

Fort Peck tribes in northern Montana have established a quarantine site to host surplus Yellowstone bison to ensure that Yellowstone bison are free of disease.

North American tribes with strong cultural and spiritual ties to bison are natural partners in the restoration of this iconic North American species. For thousands of years, the plains bison provided food and shelter for tribal communities across the Northern Great Plains. Today, Native Americans have an opportunity to do the same for the bison in return.

Tell the National Park Service you support their Preferred Alternative to allocate surplus bison to Fort Peck for quarantine to ensure that these valuable bison contribute to conservation and cultural restoration efforts in North America.
Dear National Park Service,

I am writing in support of the Preferred Alternative in the Yellowstone Bison Quarantine Plan Environmental Assessment. Surplus bison from Yellowstone National Park should be used for conservation and cultural purposes and I support the establishment of Fort Peck's quarantine facility to ensure that disease-free bison can become part of conservation and cultural herds.

Fort Peck tribes in northern Montana have established a quarantine site to host surplus Yellowstone bison. Quarantine is a proven means of ensuring that Yellowstone bison are free of Brucellosis.

I believe that North American tribes with strong cultural and spiritual ties to bison are natural partners in the restoration of this iconic North American species. For thousands of years, the plains bison provided food and shelter for tribal communities across the Northern Great Plains. You and our Native American partners have an opportunity to do the same for the bison in return.

Fort Peck tribes have demonstrated clear leadership in establishing this quarantine facility, and your support in the allocation of Yellowstone bison will help put healthy bison back on North American lands instead of sending them to slaughter.
