Tell the House to Help Prevent Labor Trafficking

  • by: Polaris

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people coming to work in the U.S. on visas are put at greater risk of labor trafficking by unchecked labor recruiters. Abusive recruiters prey on the dreams of workers, tricking them into exploitative jobs and charging them massive fees. H.R. 3344, the Fraudulent Overseas Recruitment and Trafficking Elimination Act of 2013, could help prevent labor trafficking, but it needs more support.

Cristopher's story shows the horrors of labor trafficking and why we must fight to end it. He was thrilled to be fulfilling his lifelong dream to work in the United States. After his labor recruiter in the Philippines showed him a signed job offer at a resort in the Appalachian mountains, he paid them nearly $5,000 for the opportunity.

But when he arrived in the U.S., he was told the job didn't exist. He was told to get on a bus to a Gulf state and travelled for 3 days with no money for food or water. He had to clean hotel rooms for 15 - 18 hours per day at a significantly lower wage, was constantly monitored, and threatened with deportation. Cristopher was worried for his family and unsure how he would repay his debt to his recruiter.

Thankfully, Cristopher was able to escape and is now safe. But let’s stop recruiters from preying on more people like Cristopher. H.R. 3344 ensures:

No more lying in contracts
No more fees
More oversight of recruiters

Please call on the House to pass this legislation to help stop labor trafficking in the U.S.
