Make Preventing Violence Against Women an International Priority

She was gang raped by a group of six men who dumped her bloodied, broken body by the side of the road in Delhi, India. The 23-year-old’s story was told and re-told in the headlines. Her subsequent death sparked an international outcry, and discussions about the epidemic of rape and violence in India and around the world.
One in three women worldwide have been raped, abused, forced into prostitution, or suffered some other form of violence. This is happening every day, in every country around the world – but those who commit these acts all too frequently walk away without consequences. We need to do something to stop this atrocity.
Right now, there’s a bill before Congress that would make ending violence against women and girls a top diplomatic priority: the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA). IVAWA won’t change what happened to women and girls who have already suffered at the hands of violence. But it would make a real difference in the lives of women and girls who have survived violence, as they work to heal, and would hold those who commit acts of violence accountable for their actions. And it would protect women and girls who are still free from suffering today.

The widespread prevalence of gender-based violence around the globe is atrocious. Rates of violence reach up to 70 percent in some countries. Every day, women and girls around the world are forced to trade sex for food or school fees. Every day, women and girls are beaten and abused. The list goes on and on.
Adding insult to injury, all too often these violent crimes are not prosecuted and, worse still, they become socially accepted and tolerated. Violence against women is a global health crisis and human rights violation that contributes to instability and insecurity throughout our world.
Please stand up for women and girls and help pass the International Violence Against Women Act.
This bill elevates the issues of gender-based violence (GBV)and women’s empowerment at the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and requires the U.S. government to implement a long-term comprehensive strategy to prevent and respond to GBV. IVAWA will streamline and better coordinate anti-GBV programming across various U.S. government agencies, making addressing GBV a cornerstone of U.S. development and foreign policy. Because this legislation is aimed at coordinating and integrating existing programs, it does not require the appropriation of additional funding.
H.R.3571 provides the United States with a critical opportunity to make a real difference. The world’s women and girls need this legislation.
