Tell Your Member of Congress: Women Must be Heard in the Climate Change Debate!

Climate change impacts, such as floods, droughts, and extreme weather, affect us all. And as the primary providers of food, water and resources for their families, women not only feel this burden the most, but are key leaders in efforts to prepare and adapt.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California re-introduced a resolution in Congress which recognizes the disproportionate impact that climate change has on women. And women in developing countries from Malawi to Bangladesh are increasingly speaking up. Will you join them?

Tell your member of Congress to support the Women's Climate Change Resolution to ensure climate policies effectively address women's needs.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Every day, in countless places around the world, women's lives and livelihoods are being threatened by forces beyond their control. The impacts of climate change, such as floods, droughts, extreme weather, and declining agricultural production, affect everyone. But when crops, water sources, and natural resources become scarce, women--who are often responsible for managing these resources--suffer the most.

That's why I urge you to support the Women's Climate Change Resolution, H.Con.Res.36. We must recognize the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and the efforts of women globally to address climate disruption if we are to ensure sustainable development worldwide.

Women are uniquely positioned to create more resilient communities and help countries adapt to climate change. When given the necessary tools, they use their income and resources to increase the well-being of their children and families, and play a critical role in reducing food insecurity, poverty, and the socioeconomic effects of climate change. Women are often in the best position to provide and consult on adaptive strategies, but their voices are rarely represented. This needs to change.

Your support of the Women's Climate Change Resolution would help ensure that climate policies adequately address women's needs, and also incorporate women's voices in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of strategies to address climate disruption. For myself, and on behalf of women around the world, thank you for your co-sponsorship of H.Con.Res.36.
