Call on Senate Leader Reid: Stop Abortion Coverage Ban for Private Plans

Target: Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
The House of Representatives passed health-reform legislation that included an anti-choice amendment that will seriously jeopardize women's access to abortion. The Stupak-Pitts amendment makes it virtually impossible for private insurance companies that participate in the new health system to offer abortion coverage to women.

This would have the effect of denying women the right to use their own personal, private funds to purchase an insurance plan with abortion coverage in the new health system!

We must stop health-care reform from being enacted with this ban! Call on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to stand firm against a ban on abortion coverage for women in the new health system.

Dear Senate Majority Leader Reid,

I ask you to stand firm against attempts to attack women's reproductive-health care, including women's access to insurance coverage for abortion, when the Senate takes up the health-reform bill.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment makes it virtually impossible for private insurance companies that participate in the new system to offer abortion coverage to women. This would have the effect of denying women the right to use their own personal, private funds to purchase an insurance plan that includes abortion coverage in the new health system -- a radical departure from the status quo. Presently, more than 85 percent of private insurance plans cover abortion services.

Do not further entangle health-care reform in anti-abortion politics; please reject calls to insert the Stupak-Pitts language in the Senate's health-care bill.

The right-wing want abstinence before marriage. Idiotic and unreasonable. They don't care what kind of baby it is, they don't care if it is from a bipolar crack addict mother and the father who is a drug addict and beats his woman. So they have a trembling, convulsive baby they insisted on being brought into this world. It has brain damage; there will never be activity in the frontal lobe of the brain to cut off impulsive, sometimes violent thoughts, and virtually simultaneous action. Republicans, in particular, don't want to adopt kids like that, bring them into their own home, and yet also don't want to pay for an orphanage or feed and cloth them for 18 years. What will happen if the child is disabled? Then they cost a fortune! They strain their tax dollars! They don't want to do anything else for these children, so I guess they'll just run in the streets. There are so many other causes/matters that need their attention; but they focus on this one, which will also ultimately, harm themselves. Abortion is always an ugly matter; there is no debating that. Of course there should have been birth control! But it is the lesser of two evils. A child no one wants at this point in history will end up on the street. Of course they will commit crimes! What do you think?! The propaganda against abortion always shows late-term abortions, not the kind that I'm addressing here; although, there are still times when it is a rare medical necessity. Isn't the soul eternal anyway, people? They need to connect the dots. They can still not like it or believe in abortion; God will know that anyway. But to go out of their way to impede it? Foolish! They need to let it be, and focus on another cause, for their ascendants' sake.

Abortion is a woman's right. It is her body and she has the right to do what is best for her. Please don't allow religious beliefs to cloud the issue.

This is such a huge step back for our country. I understand that abortion still needs to be debated. This is not the way to do it.

Women should have the right to abortion coverage if their own personal funds are used to cover themselves just as much as men should have the right to use their personal funds for vasectomy coverage.

It seems that MEN don't have to DEAL with getting pregnant. I've known women whom seem to get pregnant from aman LOOKING at them??? WE call these women " fertile Myrtle" Perhaps women should just STOP having sex with men since they take NO responsibility.

This is an affront to both personal freedom and the free market. The government has no business telling private insurance companies what they can and cannot cover.

If abortion funding is banned even though private patient money would be used for the procedure then the Supreme Court will strike that part of the reform bill down. Please don't pander to a small group of extremists!

Roe v. Wade is still the law of the land. If health care reform is passed with the inclusion of the Stupak-Pitts amendment, I'm afraid the radical right will next try to make abortion illegal.

The Catholic Church has no business forcing their beliefs on the general public. It is none of their business what we choose to do. They should not be able to make choices that belong to a woman and her Doctor. Choice for woman is the law of the land.
