Stand Up For Places You Love

A mega coal mine in our beautiful north, dredging and dumping in our Great Barrier Reef, fracking for gas in the Kimberley, and opening up ancient Tasmanian forests to logging — the places you love are under threat from big, polluting companies trying to make a quick buck.

Australia's unique natural places deserve strong protection by law. We have a responsibility to protect them and the habitats of our wildlife, for future generations. But instead of being scaled up, our environmental laws are being watered down — all so big business can mine more, dredge deeper and frack faster with no independent oversight.

The government is exploiting weaknesses in our current laws to push through reckless developments that should never be allowed. Now they want to make our current laws even weaker by handing over approval powers to state governments reliant on revenue from environmentally damaging industries like mining.

We've already seen the damage state governments can cause. In Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria we've seen national parks opened up to logging, mining and dredging, risking important habitat for endangered species like the black-throated finch.

The most effective way we can safeguard the places we love is with a new generation of environmental laws with independent bodies set up to enforce them.
