End International Violence Against Women

At least 1 out of every 3 women in the world will be beaten, raped, or abused in a violent manner in her lifetime. In some countries, this statistic is as high as 7 out of 10 women.

We cannot continue to stand by while women are violated because other nations accept violence as a cultural custom or tradition.

Violence against women is a human rights issue.

On February 4, the International Violence Against Women Act was reintroduced by the Senate as a piece of legislation that would make ending violence against women a priority in the United States' foreign policy objectives. The bill proposes a five-year action plan to enhance prevention, emergency, and humanitarian relief programs.

I am writing to urge you to support the International Violence Against Women Act, which would make ending violent acts against women a priority in our foreign policy goals.

As a country, we cannot keep standing by while women are violated because other nations accept violence as a cultural custom or tradition. "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Women across the globe have the right to live their lives free from the fear of being beaten, raped, or otherwise abused--and right now, this is a reality for one out of three women worldwide and up to 7 out of 10 women in some countries.

You can make a difference and lessen those numbers by passing this bill. The five-year plan proposed by the International Violence Against Women Act will not only provide aid to emergency and humanitarian relief programs but also focus on prevention program to change attitudes about violence against women. Violence not only abuses the victim but is the cause of destruction and perpetuates poverty across the globe.
