Time is running out. Protect wilderness and wild rivers in California's Central Coast region!

The effort to permanently protect California's Central Coast took an important step forward when Senator Barbara Boxer joined Representatives Lois Capps, Julia Brownley, and Sam Farr to introduce the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act to add wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, and other designations in the Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument.

But Sen. Boxer and Rep. Capps are retiring at the end of 2016, so the future of these lands is uncertain. Let's keep the momentum going by urging our representatives to request committee hearings for these important bills.

Los Padres National Forest provides habitat for 468 species of wildlife, including the endangered California condor and the southern steelhead. The Carrizo Plain National Monument is home to an array of plant and animal life, including several threatened and endangered species, majestic tule elk, and pronghorn antelope. The monument hosts important Native American rock art created first by the Chumash people, as early as 2000 B.C., and later by the Yokuts.

These landscapes are an important part of America's natural and cultural heritage, contribute to the regional economy, and are a shared resource that the public enjoys through outdoor recreation.

Thank Senator Boxer and Representative Capps for their work to protect California's Central Coast through the designation of wilderness and wild rivers, and urge them to do everything they can to secure passage of this legislation in 2016.
Dear Senator Boxer and Representative Capps,

I am writing to thank you for your efforts to protect the special lands in the Central Coast region and to urge you to prioritize passage of the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act in your final year in Congress. Please request a committee hearing for your legislation to permanently protect the wild public lands and rivers of that region.

Your conservation bill would protect some of central California's most scenic and spectacular lands. From the oak-studded ridge and stunning ocean views of the Condor Ridge Scenic Area to the dazzling wildflower displays of the Carrizo Plains to the culturally rich sandstone canyons of the Chumash Wilderness additions, this proposal would ensure that a key part of California's wild heritage remains intact for the enjoyment of future generations.

The Act would protect landscapes that are an important part of America's natural and cultural heritage, contribute to the regional economy, and are a shared resource that the public enjoys through numerous outdoor recreation activities. I strongly support your legislation and ask that you urge committee leaders to schedule a hearing as soon as possible. Passage of the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act would be a fitting legacy of your outstanding career in office.

Thank you for your continued leadership and commitment to conserving California's public lands.
