Voice Your Support of President Bush's Ocean Conservation Plan!

Target: President Bush
Sponsored by: Care2
President Bush has been working with environmental conservation groups to create a list of endangered ocean areas around U.S. territories. Under the Antiquities Act of 1906, the president can protect areas of historic or scientific interest without congressional approval. President Bush is planning to use this power to designate marine monuments - that is, national parks for oceans. Such a designation would protect these areas, which include rich coral reefs and magnificent sea life, from fishing, oil exploitation and other commercial development. The Bush Administration proposal is a needed step in the continuing health of our world's oceans and ecosystems! It is important for the president to know that the public is in favor of his initiative. Voice your thanks to President Bush, and tell him you support his unprecedented marine conservation program today.

For more information on this proposal, see the NPR article Bush May Create Largest Marine Reserves in World.

Success!

In early January, 2009, President George W. Bush designated vast tracts of American-controlled Pacific Ocean islands, reefs and sea floor as marine national monuments.

The protected zones, including parts of the deep Mariana Trench and an area near the Equator and American Samoa, span over 195,000 square miles, or an area larger than the states of Oregon and Washington combined.

Thank you for everything you do. Please click here for more petitions.
Dear President Bush,

I write in support of your plan to designate marine monuments in our world's oceans. Your proposal will protect valuable ecosystems for the rich coral reefs and diverse marine animals that rely on our world's oceans for survival.

Together with the marine reserve around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands you created in 2006, these marine monuments create a "blue legacy" for your presidency. Using the power you have under the Antiquities Act to protect threatened waters is a valuable use of your position.

I appreciate your dedication to conserving the delicate ecosystems in our world's oceans.

Sincerely,

I support any Bush effort. He has only been the best president in history and cannot do any wrong. Every decision he has ever made was to better the quality of our lives, therefore I support him. Without reticence.

This is one of the few big pushes you've made in your second term that I can support. Thanks from us, wildlife and the planet.

The oceans give us life. Ocean reefs support entire eco-systems and fish stocks (currently collapsing) that require complete protection to ensure future sustainability and a planet that future generations can inherit intact and not have to fix.

The oceans and all the creatures that live in them are so important to human beings--not only as a food and biological resources but for our spiritual and mental health too. Seeing the ocean from the shore adds richness and beauty to many people's lives. Playing, snorkeling, and diving in the ocean's coral reefs is one of the most wonderful things I have ever experienced. The ocean heals us if we protect it. Thenk you for your help in making this great thing happen!
