Break the cycle of poverty: help families around the world transform their lives

Nahid is a mother of two from Konia — a slum in Varanasi — in the state of Uttar Pradesh. People in Konia have no access to potable water, sewage systems, roads, health care centres or adequate schools, and around 37% of the people in Varanasi live in slums just like this.

Like many other women in Konia, Nahid struggled to care for her family under these conditions. She used to work for someone else in a garment factory, earning only $1 USD per day. Her pay was sporadic, and her hours were long.

Facing these harsh conditions, Nahid took out a small loan from Opportunity International Australia and used it to start her own garment business. This helped her earn enough money to feed her children three meals a day, and employ 10 other women so they can earn incomes too. Nahid's also able to send her children to school - her dream is to ensure they get an education so they can have a brighter future free from poverty.
