UK: Don't abandon Syrian child refugees

The Syrian war has left thousands of children without a family. Alone in the world, carrying the trauma of the horrors they have been through, many of these children still have nowhere safe to call home. Please sign this petition to demand that the UK government honour its pledge to give sanctuary to 3,000 Syrian child refugees.

Last year, David Cameron said that the UK would take in 3,000 of the unaccompanied child victims of Syria's cruel conflict. Compared to refugee intake in many countries, this was a modest offer from one of the world's wealthiest nations, but it was a good start. It recalled our efforts during World War Two, when we offered sanctuary to many refugees fleeing Nazi violence.

Now, the government is backing down on the pledge, in a callous move that puts our country to shame. A new figure of just 350 children was quietly announced whilst all eyes were on the Article 50 Brexit vote. The excuse given was lack of resources. This backtrack means 2,650 children will be denied help and safety by one of the world's richest countries.

Judith Dennis, Policy Manager at the Refugee Council said: ''The Government's job is far from done. The global refugee crisis hasn't gone away and if anything it's getting worse. The UK needs to step up rather than step back and ensure that we pull our weight by offering refuge to more vulnerable people.''

Please sign this petition to demand that the government holds true to our country's pledge, and gives 3,000 unaccompanied Syrian refugee children access to a safe place to call home. If enough people sign, the government will have to recognise that the world's eyes are on us, and that the UK public want to help these children.

The UK Government:

Last year, David Cameron pledged to take 3,000 unaccompanied Syrian child refugees into the UK. We demand that figure is honoured.

We have the resources, and we have the will. These children have little or nothing.

Reducing the intake to 350 is unacceptable and puts our country to shame.
