DEMAND AN END TO "If It Bleeds It Leads" We Demand Fair portrayal of Black and Brown People in the M

We the people reject the unbalanced portrayal of Black and Brown Americans by the media. The mantra if it bleeds it leads gives media outlets free reign over the images of Black and Brown Americans and creates a negative, unbalanced, stereotypical image of our youth that creates an atmosphere of negativity and fear.

Our youth deserve balanced representation of their lives, ambitions, heroic deeds, accomplishments and abilities. The recent coverage of the Bud Billiken Parade denied the entire world an opportunity to view Black Chicago at its finest.

Media outlets are very well aware of their placement in Google Searches and tarnished an 85 year tradition with their headlines and focus on a shooting that happened near the Bud Billiken Parade. More than 1 million African Americans were there to herald the end of summer and the return to school for our youth.

The Grand Marshal was a representative sent by the President of the United States and the long running parade featured Marching Bands, Drill Teams, Dance Units and Floats filled with young Black and Brown people.

The media is a service and tool for society. It must be balanced and fair in its portrayal of all of society's members.

I call for a meeting with the President and the heads of the major media outlets to present our demand for justice.
