Oppose 6-Story Buildings in Downtown Westport, CT

Westport’s Planning & Zoning Commission wants to allow 60-foot tall movie theaters (with up to 50,000 sq. ft. of interior space!) in the downtown area. While we all want a movie theater, we think that this idea will ruin Westport’s quaint, historic character and will open the door to other oversized buildings. One developer has already filed a pre-application to raze a downtown house and replace it with a 67-foot commercial building. This plan may also have devastating consequences for abutting residential neighborhoods--if a theater fails, the building would revert to retail or some other commercial activity.        If you want to preserve Westport’s small-town charm, please sign this petition. If you can ,come to the P&Z hearing on Thursday, September 8th at 7:00 PM at Town Hall (110 Myrtle Street, Westport). Thank you very much.

We, the undersigned, oppose Text Amendment 637, which would permit 60 foot high buildings in downtown Westport, CT, create a new "overlay zone", and increase square footage of certain commercial buildings from 10,000 square feet to a maximum of 50,000 square feet.
We would very much appreciate your support.  There is urgency to this request because this Amendment is being heard on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Westport Town Hall at 7:00 PM.  We will present this petition at that hearing.  Thank you very, very much.
