More than 500 cats live on land where the construction of the high speed train tracks between Madrid and Barcelona will soon begin. They live there because they have been abandoned by their owners. The cats suffer from cold, hunger and mistreatment, and the City Council of Barcelona hasn't done anything to resolve this problem. Many cats have been killed in the course of earlier public projects in Barcelona, and we want to avoid another massacre. However, the City council of Barcelona has ignored our petition and the local media sarcastically claim that the cats live happily along this route and that are other, more important things for the local council to discuss.
This is an URGENT SOS, because the construction works of the Sagrera station and the high speed train routes will begin before May 2007 and many people prefer the city council of Barcelona not to spend money on cats under the influence of local journalists, who deride our attempts as trivial. If we can't get concrete promise to create controlled cat colonies and to do TN"R" (trap-neuter-"return to safe places") soon, most of the cats will be killed by the construction works or by the insensible people who poison these poor animals.
We still have no news from the Council, and worst of all, the works begin within 30 days. If we have no concrete assurances, we will have what we do not want to accept: DEAD CATS, MUTILATIONS, CATS BURIED ALIVE, etc.

I am very saddened by the treatment of cats in the city/province. I do not know much about Barcelona, however I would anticipate that human beings all over the globe would take some interest in animals. After all, they are creatures that can sense, hear, feel, and show emotion. Cats, like any other animal, deserve to be taken care of by humans (supposedly as we are more intelligent, caring, and capable of showing affection). I understand that it is of importance that construction work be done to allow cities to be well-established and developed. However, I am sure that some measures can be taken to protect the 500+ cats that also inhabit the area, where development is to occur. How can it be humane to build and develop at the expense of 500+ suffering cats? After all, frail senior citizens and those with disabilities; who may have lost their ability to communicate, use cognitive skills, and express themselves, are considered a part of society, and it is ensured that they are well taken care of and advocated for. What is it that separates such groups of people from frail creatures? Is it not fair that some humane treatment is shown for these cats? Please, we request you to at least consider these cats; by at least ensuring they are sent to pounds. After that, their fate will decide as to whether they are adopted or peacefully put to sleep. Death at the hands of a vet, is much less painful and sickening than death by being killed by construction vehicles and being buried alive. Please, please, please do something about this, and show the rest of the world that Barcelona is a city that promotes the wellbeing of animals. The rest of the world too, will be proud. Adolescents like myself thrive from knowing that good still exists in this world. Please do not let adolescents like myself down; it's already hard growing up seeing so many atrocities in this world. Please use your head and heart to think about this situation; 500+ lives are in your hands. Many thanks for reading this. |
