Ask Candidates About Global Poverty in Debate

Target: Jim Lehrer, Presidential Debate Moderator
Sponsored by: The ONE Campaign
Only two questions about global poverty have been asked in the history of modern presidential debates - a shockingly low figure for a problem that affects billions of people worldwide.

In 2008, voters need to know what Barack Obama and John McCain will do to end the most extreme suffering in our increasingly interconnected world. The world's poorest countries are in crisis, and we have a moral obligation to act. And extreme poverty and a lack of economic opportunities fuels desperation and instability, making it in the U.S.'s strategic interests to address global poverty.

Send a letter to debate moderator Jim Lehrer, urging him to ask "Just ONE Question" on global poverty at the first presidential debate, September 26, in Oxford, Mississippi.

Dear Mr. Lehrer,

At the presidential debate, please ask John McCain and Barack Obama just ONE question about their plans to fight global poverty.

While the United Stated is experiencing an economic crisis, we can not even begin to compare our situations to those of the worlds poorest countries. The worlds poorest countries are in crisis, and we have a moral obligation to act; to ensure people all over the world have access to the basic human rights or food, shelter, and protection. We need to know what our presidential candidates plan to do about it.

There Are Also Millions of Starving Children in the poor sections of the United States of America that this government looks the other way as these children go hungry daily. Please consider helping our own as well as these children in these other countries.

Global poverty drains us all and causes uprisings. If we can effectively help those at home and in developing nations to find ways to reverse their circumstances it can only help us all toward prosperity and peace!
