NYPD: Trans People Deserve Dignity

When the NYPD arrested transgender activist justin adkins at the Occupy Wall Street Protest on October 1st, he expected to be treated the same way as all the other protesters. Instead, the NYPD handcuffed him to a metal handrail for eight hours without offering him food or water.

"If the officer's concern was about my safety, I perceived I was in much more danger in the accommodations they gave me away from my fellow protestors," wrote justin on his personal blog, justinadkins.com. "Additionally, I was made fun of and treated differently throughout the entire process."

If officers of the law cannot be relied upon to treat everyone they detain with respect and dignity, then something is deeply wrong. Tell the NYPD to develop a protocol for transgender detainees so that what happened to justin will not happen to anyone else!
The recent treatment that transgender activist justin adkins incurred at the hands of the NYPD was both unacceptable and unethical. Because justin's arresting officers had not been properly trained as to how to treat transgender people, they responded by making him feel alienated and abused.

The NYPD needs to develop a protocol for the treatment and respect of transgender people. Everyone deserves the same dignity, regardless of their identity.

I urge you to work with your officers in developing an easily understood best practices protocol for the treatment of transgender individuals, so that what happened to justin adkins does not reoccur in the future.
