Pierre Claver Mbonimpa has devoted his life to the fight for justice in Burundi. This August, he was followed home and shot at close range in the face by an unknown person. He was left critically wounded, but thankfully alive.
Because of his courageous activism, Pierre Claver has regularly faced threats, detention, and attacks, but this recent act of violence demonstrates just how dangerous the situation in Burundi has become for those who speak out against the government.
With support from the Fund for Global Human Rights, which provides resources and tools for human rights groups around the world, Pierre Claver runs the Association for Protection of Prisoners and Human Rights. In a time of great insecurity and restriction of freedoms in Burundi, Pierre Claver continued his work to denounce human rights violations and the harassment of human rights activists. His selfless commitment to the fight for justice and basic freedoms in Burundi is truly extraordinary.
