Help Save Japan's Dolphins

Target: President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki
Sponsored by: TakePart.com/TheCove and SaveJapanDolphins.org
In The Cove, a team of activists and filmmakers infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.

The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. Once the Japanese people know we believe they will demand change.

Send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue. Everyone who signs the letter will be able to have their name displayed in a widget that will be posted on top social networks, web sites and blogs in Japan. The widget will link to actions people there can take to make a difference.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I recently heard about the documentary film The Cove and was alarmed to find out that more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are brutally killed each year off the coast of Japan. In addition, Japanese consumers are being sold dolphin meat, containing dangerously high levels of mercury, often labeled as whale meat.

I ask that you urge the Japanese government to revoke permits that allow Japan's Fisheries Agency to continue this heinous, dangerous and illegal practice.

I also urge American leadership to ensure that the International Whaling Commission includes the proper management of dolphins and porpoises and a comprehensive plan to stop the slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

Your immediate action is needed.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]
We took action on "Help Save Japan's Dolphins"!

This is totally unacceptable. You say you have power to do good things in the world. Why can't you get this to stop???

I just find this completely horrifying and so sad! I've only known for so little time, and they should not be allowed to do those things. Those dolphins need to live and they DO have their emotions and their lives to live for. It's completely inhumane and just so terrible of what they're doing. I can never see how completely selfish any person can be!! This has to stop, for the sake of the dolphins. That's just another form of manslaughter, right there. So cruel.

I couldn't believe that some Japanese have been killing dolphines in such an evil way. At the beginning I even thought that it was just a made up story and couldn't be the fact. I cannot believe that it is actually happening in my country. I really hope that those ignorant fishermen in Taiji cho will realize the evilness of their act and stop murdering dolphines asap.

This is horrible. The film put me in tears. No humane person could support the murder of these magnificient creatures. Not to mention the health concerns to the Japanese people who do not even know that they are eating dolphin.

I just want to know in what kind of situation a man will be forced to commit suicide. The dolphins did. The murderers who killed dolphins in Taiji, Japan were at large, and even legal.

I am sickened by the killing of dolphins in Taiji, Japan. We are on this earth as stewards and we are doing a horrible job. There will be a day of reckoning.

The injustice and murders of the thousands of dolphins being slaughtered in Taiji, Japan and all across the world is heart wrenching and horrific to say the least. I was truly moved by the work of Richard O'Barry and the rest of the crew that took part in the making of the movie The Cove. It Would be a further injustice to the whales and dolphins and all marine life if we as a nation, and the rest of the world, do not do our part to stop this massacre that is threatening the balance of life for these precious beings.

I am from a country where we hunt whale..but not in that scale like its done in Japan. I don't eat whale myself and never will, especially not dolphins. I am against all whale and dolphin hunting in Japan, all countries around the world and including my own of course. The animals will not be here forever, and people have grown, not only in population, but in mind enough too, to grow our own food. We can not take and take and take forever from nature, but rather give back and preserve what there is left. Stop killing the dolphins. Its a shame, disgrace and not even healthy. Not for dolphins, peoples health or nature. Just sad. For everyone.

As a resident of a coastal town, a veterinarian, a volunteer in a marine mammal stranding network, and an individual passionate about ocean conservancy, I want to believe that I can make a difference. Help me to help the world's oceans, and all the life within them. Yes, the world is burdened by many problems, but let's not turn our backs on our responsibility to be stewards of the earth.

Although I'm just one person in this large world, I am going to do my part in helping with this cause. It's more than just having the slaughter stopped. It's stopping the demand for the capture and slaughter in the first place. I will no longer pay to visit dolphins/whales in captivity. I was never much of a sea food lover, but I am never eating sushi again! I will educate my children, family and friends on this issue. I will host a "Cove" party to make others aware of this huge problem.

By not taking immediate and sufficiet action, we will be responsible for thousands of deaths due to mercury posioning in the near future. The goal is to make the Japanese people aware that they are purchasing falsely marked seafood products as well as bring to light the horrible and lethal consequences of mercury poisoning. We also must raise awareneness among the American people, like this documentary does, of what is happening in Japan and what the public can do to help stop it.
