Tell Congress: Reauthorize Runaway and Homeless Youth Programs!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Covenant House

"My mother, she was alcoholic... I was in about ten group homes throughout my life and they were pretty rough. You couldn't be too nice to people, or they would try to take advantage of you..." -Fredrico
It is estimated that approximately 750,000 to 2 million youth, like Fredrico shown here, run away from home or experience homelessness each year.

But a program called the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act is helping these young people achieve everything that they can. These programs have been proven to reduce dropout rates, double school attendance, increase college attendance, increase employment rates, reduce parental physical abuse and improve family relationships.

America's homeless youth are denied shelter, housing and support because communities lack the spectrum of programs needed for complete support. These programs would build strong communities with partnerships among community-based organizations, businesses, law enforcement and local government to make sure these youth are taken care of.

Please tell Congress to allow $140 million in FY2008 for Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (RHYA) programs.
deadline: 12-4-2008

Dear Member of Congress,

Currently, there are approximately 750,000 to 2 million young adults who experience homelessness each year in America. Despite these rising numbers of homeless youth, the amount of federal funding allotted to this area has been either stagnant or declined every year since 2002.

The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act Reauthorization of 2008 (H.R. 3409) would fund programs that ensure safety and support to thousands of youth each year, via community-based nonprofit and public organizations that provide or support emergency shelter (not to exceed 15 days) for youth under age 18, counseling services for youth and their families to assist them in reuniting with their families, or connecting them to alternative supervised settings. But cuts to this federal funding have had a devastating effect on communities that lack sufficient funding on their own to provide youth with the necessary housing and support.

The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act is a cost-effective alternative to more expensive out-of-home placements. The average cost of serving a youth in a transitional living project is $8,810 -- less than half the minimum cost of serving youth through the child welfare or juvenile justice systems, with average annual costs ranging from $25,000 - $55,000 per youth.

Homeless youth face endless challenges. That is why we need the 108th Congress to help communities tackle the problems facing homeless youth, so we can get these children off the streets and help them grow up healthy and safe. Please ensure that the FY2008 budget includes $140 million for Runaway and Homeless Youth Act Programs.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Please Help these homeless youth. I see and know some of the youth who live on the streets in my hometown some of them are kicked out of their homes to live on the street simply for the fact that they are gay and their parents don't accept them. Please help these youth find some place to call home and feel loved thank you

This is a criminal and unrepresentative government. It needs to be held accountable and removed from power immediately, by any means necessary.

As the adoptive mom of 5 kids who might otherwise have needed these services, I know the difference help can make; to ignore homeless youth is to breed an underclass our society can ill afford, and for which we will pay a higher price, not only in jails, mental hospitals, and recovery programs, but in wasted human potential.

Helping these youth will not only help them personally but also will allow them to become productive members of society and help to break cycles of homelessness.

Too many teens run away from home because of a lack of communication between them and their parents. Sometimes their parents are kicking them out of the home without trying to help their teens. So, I believe this will help our teens get the help they need from everyone including their parents.

I was once homeless myself as an adult and feel it must be 10 times more difficult to be a child and without a home. Help needs to be given to these youth to rise up despite their difficult circumstances.

These are the most at risk members of our society. Working with them to get them off the streets at this point is the best chance we have of making a true impact on these kids.

Many children that run away from home end up living on the streets, where they are prey to pimps, drug dealers, pediphiles, and other lowlifes. Many of these children run away because running away is preferable to their home situation. How sad, to run away, hoping to find something better and end up finding something much worse. We need to help these children, before they become statistics.
