Stop the Bush/Cheney Attack on Endangered Species Act

Target: Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
The Bush/Cheney administration has just proposed sweeping changes to the Endangered Species Act that would roll back decades of protection and prevent federal agencies from trying to protect endangered species from one of the biggest threats they face - global warming.

This new proposal, much of which has been previously rejected by Congress, would allow federal officials to bypass current requirements for independent, scientific review of development projects. Instead, federal officials could decide for themselves whether new development would harm endangered wildlife - with the burden of accountability falling on citizens to file lawsuits.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne admitted that these changes have been proposed to make sure that the Endangered Species Act would not be used to regulate the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions to protect polar bears and other species from global warming. In fact, agencies would be specifically forbidden from considering a project's emissions and the effect those would have on wildlife and habitat.

Proposing these drastic changes with only five months left in this administration is clearly an effort to secure changes that President Bush and Secretary Kempthorne have been unable to push through Congress. Tell Secretary Kempthorne to stop this back-door attack on our endangered wildlife!

To Secretary Kempthorne,

I am writing to oppose the Department of the Interior's proposal to weaken Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act.

Federal agencies are currently required to consult with either U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration regarding federal projects that could potentially harm endangered species. But this weakening of the ESA would allow federal agencies to unilaterally decide that such consultation is not necessary, thus allowing agencies to regulate themselves. The only recourse the public would have to protect endangered species would be through litigation.

It beyond belief that these idiots would be so callous in regards to other species. However this is been the mantra of the administration if it does not effect me it is not a problem.

There is simply nothing more demoralizing or undermining of one's confidence in the integrity of public officials than to have to fight the same battles over and over and over again, and against the same special interests speciously mutating one ploy after another, wasting the time, money, and good faith of an entire nation!

Hasn't enough damage already been done to the planet? How bad will it need to get before you finally realise the part you have played? You are in a privileged position and have responsibilities that you should start living up to.

If these gifts from God don't have it tough enough with their habitat shrinking everyday because of human encroachment, now we have a proposal out there that will cripple the ESA. I say enough!

Please protect the polar bears and all endangered species. Have some integrity, don't agree to cut out existing protections, limit ESA and remove any chance for regulation in protection of wildlife by making it into litigious matter.

the ESA is very important. destroying it would undo years of good work. no noe has any right to get rid of the ESA. the agencies will be able to ignore what effect their new developments. the fact that they would be forbidden to consider the project's effects on the wildlife is absolutely disgusting. how dare anyone even consider such an atrocity?

Well why not help these animals in need, they can't help themselves, not with how people keep treating them. So we should help them get there lives back to where it should be.
